"terrible disapointment" 2010-04-26
By Gary Roulston (Massillon OH)
I am incapable of re-threading the units needle even with the threading tool The eye on the needle is so tiny I cannot see it clearly with a 4x magnifier glass. The thread does not feed freely and broke the first dozen stitches.... Not worth the money and trouble to send it back!

"DOES NOT WORK AT ALL- DO NOT BUY" 2010-03-19
By V. Calero
This product is the worse product I've ever bought from Amazon or anywhere else. It simply does not work AT ALL. I opened the box and read the user manuel over and over and over. I did step by step to make it work and it simply did not react. It's like if this was a toy. I regret paying $19.99 for this. I am extremely dissappointed with Amazon for having these type of vendors/products.

I will most likely not purchase anything from Amazon again after this.

"frustrating" 2010-03-11
By Daniel K. Ferrell
If you have no experience with sewing don't purchase, the instructions will not help you.

"cord for this machine" 2010-03-02
By J. Mitchell (Cleveland Ohio)
My mother just purchased this machine and loves it! The batteries run down quickly though. I contacted Smartek to inquire about their cord for this machine. Here's the Kicker: The cord costs $5.00 and shipping/handling is $6.99. You could almost buy another machine. The portability of this machine is what's important for my Mother so she won't be purchasing a cord!

"Very frustrating. Misleading instructions" 2010-02-24
By N. Abit (MA, USA)
I have no experience using a sewing machine and rely solely on the instructions to route the thread. The machine came in with the thread already routed but I have to change the color. After spending like an hour figuring out why it doesnt work (it will jam and the thread kept coming off the needle), I tried to insert the thread from the opposite side (opposite from the instruction), then it works. But after that, I spend quite some time to adjust the dial to get the upper and bottom seam nice. The battery cover is very hard to open. It's almost like trying to rip it off. I think the latch will break soon.

I want to give it 1 star but since it works nice after the thread is routed properly and the dial is adjusted, I add 1 more star.

"3.5, actually" 2010-04-28
By Stacey M Smith (Fredericksburg, TEXAS)
I've had this machine for almost 3 years. It was wonderful when I first got it - smooth, quick stitches, well lighted, lots of stitch variety. I had done some large projects on it and was well pleased. Then a run of problems including the bobin case wasn't functioning properly (a nick in the plastic kept catching the thread) and most recently, the mechanism that moves the needle up and down froze. Three trips for service in three years is not ideal, even for a mid-prices machine. Fantastic when it's running properly.

"Great machine for the price." 2010-03-20
By J. Barnes (Texas)
I searched long and hard for this machine and it was the best price here on Amazon. It was a used one but like new except for the box and we always throw that away. So great deals when out of original box. I was skeptic at first but I will go and try this again.

"Low Quality--Low Reliability--Frequent Repairs" 2010-02-28
By c kelly (Dayton, OH)
Great when it works, but it's been to the repair shop (must ship it--cost & hassle) and now needs to go again and it's not even a year old. 1st time, it wouldn't sew a simple straight stitch unless you put it on zig-zag!! Now, it won't wind a bobbin--runs for 2 seconds and stops. Turn it off and back on, runs for 2 seconds and stops. Turn it off and back on, etc. Totally unreliable machine and a waste of money!

"Finally, a machine I can sew with!" 2010-01-14
By Margaret Corbett (New Fairfield, CT)
I have been limping along with an old, cranky machine for years. Finally, my husband bought me this machine for Christmas and I have been sewing every since! It is light and easily set up on the dining room table. It's quiet and easy to change settings. I did have one thread jam. My heart fluttered as I thought, "here it goes, the good times are over!!" but that was hasty. It has been working fine ever since.I am so glad to have a machine I can create and sew with.

"What can I say? It gives me Confidence!" 2010-01-12
By M. Davies (MI)
The only other machine I used before this one was my mom's old (1970s era) Singer Stylist. My goodness is this an upgrade! I was able to find it for an amazing deal somewhere other than Amazon, though I haven't seen that good of a price but on a used floor model since. You will not be disappointed with this machine. It powers through multiple layers, the see-through bobbin case is quite helpful for knowing when you're running low on the bobbin thread, and It is very intuitive and easy to use. I haven't had any troubles with it(I've had it for a year and a half.)

Bottom line: You'll love it!

"Brother XL2610 Sewing Machine" 2010-03-12
By N. Turner (Missouri)
So far, I love everthing about this machine It's light weight and that's a plus; but, it doesn't sew like a light weight. It functions like a $600 machine. I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend this machine to anyone for normal every-day sewing.

"This lil gal is great!" 2009-11-15
By Sarah Micek
I made a decision to start sewing, so I needed to buy a more reliable machine than the one I was borrowing from a friend that was old and annoyingly difficult (not the best thing to relearn a skill you'd never really mastered in the first place). However, I didn't want to spend a lot of money to get the fanciest machine ever when I know that I have a tendency to obsess over things for a few weeks and then get bored. Plus, I wasn't even sure I'd be good at it. So I did my research and although I must admit that my decision to buy this particular machine had a LITTLE bit to do with it being pink, I liked the price and the simplicity. Anyway, 6 months later I still love my machine and it's so easy and reliable. We have our moments but my friend with a 500 dollar machine has the same issues with hers (it's just a sewing thing) so all in all, I totally recommend this machine if you're like me and want cheap, easy and simple. It's a bargain. Maybe it won't last to pass on to my kids but it's a great stepping stone.

Very dissappointed in this machine. I needed a second machine for some classes and chose this one because of the price. It is very loud and does not sew straight, it sews like a childs machine.I have returned it and bought a Project Runway that I am very pleased with. You get what you pay for.

"I would choose the PC420 over the NS40 sewing machine!!" 2010-04-10
By Cam (Utah)
Originally, I thought I should purchase a Brother sewing machine from a local authorized dealer because of the so-called "high quality". I went in and purchased an NS40 for $425 including tax. The only other choice was an NS80 for $600. The NS40 was very noisy, didn't have near the quality or features that this PC420 possesses, as I later discovered. As I was working on a flannel rag quilt at the time, I found I needed to return to the store and purchase a walking foot for $35. At this point, I was into the machine plus accessory for $460. I decided to look on line at Amazon and found the PC420 where I would only have to spend $40 more dollars. So, after three days, I returned the NS40 and ordered the PC420.

The contrast in the two machines was like going from the doldrums to ecstasy. If there were more than 5 stars to rate the PC420, I would give it more than five! I was in absolute heaven as I began to sew. The machine is so quiet, it purrs like a kitten. The automatic needle threader is to die for. It almost makes me want to re-thread and re-thread just to watch the mechanism. It is very fun and will bring a smile to your face. The kicker here is that this machine includes the same walking foot that I had to purchase extra with the NS40, in addition to another quilting foot, plus several more additional pressure feet. You will be amazed. I was like a kid at Christmas opening the box and checking out each item that was included -- in addition to acquainting myself with the very user friendly and wonderful features built into the machine.

The NS40 is a very basic machine, which you may say is all that you need. But, you should consider paying a little more and purchasing a machine with more stitching capacity and then grow into your machine as time goes on. This machine is a much higher quality, in my opinion, and will please you no end -- even just for basic sewing projects. As I did research on line, I discovered a site that recommends the PC420 in this general price range over any other computerized sewing machine. I urge anyone who is considering purchasing the NS40 to consider this machine instead. I promise you won't regret the decision.

"I'm in Sewing Heaven!" 2010-04-07
By GleCassie (Binghamton, NY)
This sewing machine is all I dreamed it would be. It is so freaking easy to use that I am absolutely amazed. It is simple to set up. It comes with lots of lovely stitches that are chosen with the push of a button. It self threads without effort. It has the easiest bobbin drop-in ever. I haven't used the pedal at all - it has push button technology. It sews beautifully. It comes with tons of accessories. It has a hard shell case for ease of storage and carrying. I wish I could think of more ways to extol its virtues, but I can't. It's just the most wonderful machine in its price range ever. It may even be better than machines that are more costly, I can't say for sure. I just know that for me, it is perfect. If I have to complain at all, it is that the lettering is small but I knew that when I bought it. If you want a machine with large embroidery letters - like to put on a t-shirt, etc., this isn't the machine for you. If you want a great sewing machine with lots of borders and stitch choices (and some nice lettering), this is a great machine. I can't think of anything else that is a possible downfall of my machine. In addition to all that, I ordered it from Amazon, paid just $75 extra and had it the next afternoon (on a Saturday)! I just couldn't wait. My advice? Buy it now.

"Great machine" 2010-03-27
By Raven (USA)
I haven't sewn in ages and recently decided to start up again and take on some projects. I got this machine after much research and it has been great. Of course I've only been playing with it for a day or so but so far what a big difference from my old basic model brother. It has so many great features and the machine is so quiet and sews evenly. Luckily I was able to find one in stock at a local sewing shop and the store owner said that he has been selling a lot of these lately and that it is a great deal for the price. Highly recommended for the price, believe the reviews.

"Casual sewing -- very pleased!" 2010-03-22
By D. G. M. (Mt. Pleasant, TX)
I recently purchased the Brother PC-420 solely based upon the reviews here on Amazon. My old Singer was 35 years old and needed a trip to the repair shop almost everytime I used it. I wanted a dependable, basic machine and didn't want to spend $1,000 since I'm not an expert seamstress. On my old machine, I only used straight stitch and zig-zag, but I knew I would branch out to new things if I had a machine that would not "mess up" everytime I started sewing. I've only made one simple piece with the new Brother machine, but I was quickly able to do straight stitch, overcast stitch, monogramming, and decorative stitch. I forced myself to read the manual BEFORE even attempting to thread the machine. The auto-threading needle is awesome! So far, I've found it to be everything (and more) I wanted. Not only will I enjoy using it, I'm sure I'll save money by not having to take pants and skirts to the alteration shop to have them shortened. Time will tell, but my first impressions are VERY favorable!

"Wonderful machine!" 2010-03-02
By MondoBooks (Northern California)
I did my research for buying a new sewing machine over several years....When my old Necchi showed signs of imminent demise I chose the Brother PC-420 PRW as having the features I wanted most for the amount of money I had to spend.

This machine does not disappoint!! I love the self-threading feature and the top-and-bottom auto thread cutting. After a little time spent with the exceptionally thorough manual I was able to try different stitches--my first project just happened to include free-motion quilting with nylon thread and I had no problems at all.

I have two minor complaints....the monogram feature produces such small letters as to be useless for anything other than hankerchiefs, which saddened me. And the machine does not have enough interior light for my aging eyes.

Looking forward to trying out more stitches and feet, I quickly realized that this machine had all of the features of older, mechanical machines but with about a hundred times more ease and accuracy--PLUS the features I mentioned above! I prefer using the foot pedal, but I have options to use the knee control or even the button on the machine itself....which opens up a lot of possibilities I never had on my older machines!

"Instructions for XL-3750 Sewing Machine" 2010-04-22
By Maureen Armstrong (Cowgil, Mo. USA)
I received my machine in record time from Amazon and started reading all about how to use it as soon as I got it unpacked. Really nice looking machine and easy to see all the details. The instructions for this machine are easy to read and understand. Really like the self threading needle, I have trouble threading needles and this feature is great. Learning how to use all the controls was a little hard for me. Overall I enjoy the machine and like how it works. Once you understand all the basics you can make almost any design you would want. The quilting features are outstanding I have recommended the machine to my quilting buddies.

"worthless!" 2010-03-24
By Anna L. Breininger
I've had this machine for a little over a year and it has been so disappointing! I've had it in the shop twice for tension issues and I'm finally giving up. It's like the tension dial doesn't even work. I know that tension can be a funny thing but this machine is absurd. I get the same wavering loose stitches on ANY setting. I'm pretty sure the dial is for decorative purposes and the machine has a mind of its own. The manual has been of no help. I've read the entire thing cover to cover several times and it is not very thorough. Based on this product I would never buy from Brother again.

By Colleen Wilhelm (Port Angeles, WA)
This machine works great for me right outta the box. Easy to thread and wind the bobbin. Thread tension is just right. Foot pedal is easy for me to control. I am very happy with my purchase of this refurbished machine. Had to replace my 31 year old Singer because it was stored with too much moisture in the air (good old Pacific Northwest). Otherwise it would probably still be working. I've made 2 purses so far and plan on doing a lot more. I recommend this machine.

"Christmas present for daughter" 2009-12-29
By Susan K. May (Elsie, Oregon USA)
The first thing that made me fall in love with this product was that after ordering it, it came to my house more quickly than it was estimated. I was very pleased with this as it was a present to my daughter for Christmas. I asked her how she was doing with it a couple of days ago and she is just as thrilled with as I had hoped she would be. The self-threading option was one of the best features in her eyes as she is a beginner sewer. I had read some reviews that the instructions were rather difficult to comprehend but she is having no trouble with that. The only problem with this purchase at all is the fact that she wishes she had more time to sew with it. I am very please all the way around with this purchase.

"Dear Amazon, This is NOT a brother innov-is 40 , what I am looking for !!" 2009-02-12
By Weekend Woodworker (santa fe springs, ca United States)
When i searched google for brother innov-is 40, Amazon link took me to this (different) machine.

Dear Amazon, Pl. this is not a brother innov-is 40 ( Rated best by Consumer Reports magazine ) and Please don't mislead shoppers by showing them a different sewing machine, you want to sell.

Thanks anyway, Amazon.

"so far, quite an impressive machine" 2008-11-18
By third time mom (Naperville, IL United States)
I bought this machine a couple of weeks ago. It is an upgrade for me from a VERY basic Brother machine. I bought mine at a sewing machine store; actually cheaper than Amazon and I get their expertise/service.

One major feature I was looking for in my new machine is speed control. I am teaching my daughter to sew; this machine can be set to sew very very ssssslllloooww. Great when trying to teach a nine year old. Threading is pretty simple; there is a nifty automatic needle threader. I'm using it but threading a machine needle was never a big deal for me. I also like the automatic needle up feature. On every machine I ever used previously, I had to turn the wheel when done sewing a line to raise the needle. This machine does it automatically.

This Brother makes a very nice buttonhole; not as nice perhaps as a machine twice its price but still, just fine. It has this neat buttonhole foot in which you put your desired button in the back and it uses that button to automatically make the proper sized buttonhole. All in one step. This is WAY better than my old machine.

The bobbin is a top-drop-in. No more bringing up the loop, just put in in and sew.

One feature I've yet to use is a front stop/go control button. I guess that if you didn't want to or couldn't use a foot pedal you could use this button instead. I can see it being nice for buttonholes; you just position your fabric, push the "go" button, and it makes all the side of the buttonhole and stops automatically.

This machine trys to make things oops-proof. If you've ever jambed your machine because you started sewing with the presser foot up, well, that can't happen with this machine. If things aren't "right", it will give you an error beep.

Another nice feature is that the machine automatically sets an "ideal" stitch length/width. You can overide it but for the most part, the defalt is perfect, especially with the decorative stitches.

There are several decorative stiches; I haven't quite figured out the best way to put them to use but that's just my own lack of creativity.

One last nice feature is a built-in foot holder. In front of the free-arm is a flip-down compartment that has molded, labeled spots for all your feet. It comes with a standard foot, zipper foot, blind hem stitch foot, decorative stitching foot, overlock foot, button attacher foot, and buttonhole foot. Also in the compartment is a molded space for a seam ripper and 4 bobbins (included). I've found it nice to have all these feet in one spot. I have a couple specialty feet from my old Brother machine and they fit and work just fine on my new one. An added plus.

One note; this machine takes bobbins that are a bit thicker than older ones. Buy a bunch of new ones; they say old ones won't work.

All in all, I'm very happy. I'm glad I went with this model and would buy again.

***edited to add: my one gripe about this machine is that the built in lights are lacking. My old machine put out quite a lot of light; this one is MUCH dimmer.

"Better than anything for the price" 2008-07-25

I shopped extensively before buying this machine, including reading reviews, asking folks and trying them at the shop. This machine is great. VERY easy to use, good manual, solid and attractive. So far everything I've tried has been easy and flawless. It quite literally makes sewing easier.

"Does the job" 2010-04-10
By Boopie (Richmond VA)
The case is fine for what I need - carting my sewing machine to classes. It is less rigid than I expected and sometimes I fear that the clasps will flip open (which they have not), the up side is that it is lighter than I thought and I can easily carry my machine wherever I need to go.

"case" 2010-02-06

Good sturdy case, but as it is a universal case the sewing machine does slip around a little bit.

"Sew good for my 11 yr. old granddaughter" 2010-01-31
By Mimi (Middle Island,NY)
We purchased the sewing machine for our 11 year old granddaughter who had it on her wish list for Christmas. When visiting her in Buffalo, it only took a short time before she was sewing on her own. She was able to create gifts for her family.(pillows, make-up purse)without any problem. Threading the machine and bobbin was made quite easy by good instructions. I would highly recommend this machine for many sewing projects and for any age level.

For the price, I think that it is the best deal on the market. Free super savers shipping is a great incentive.

Not much to say other than it works perfectly protecting my wifes Serger. She depends upon it regularly and it always comes back for more abuse.

"Definitely not a replacement for my Singer. But.." 2010-03-21
By Christina (CT, USA)
I'm a college student, so I wanted to get something cheap, small, and does the job.

This little guy does it.

At first, it was really temperamental. The thread would snap, or the stitches were too loose. But I played around with the tension and was able to get a decent stitch. You just have to adjust the tension depending on what type of material you are using. It's a very basic set up, with two speeds and no reverse. Good for small projects, hemming, repairing. But by no means can it replace a large machine. The needle's not very sturdy, so I wouldn't use it for thick fabrics like denim. And the stitch isn't very tight/secure. And the biggest downside is how loud the little machine gets!

It comes with the DC Adapter and a foot pedal, which most mini sewing machines don't.

Overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase. Basically, you get what you paid for.

"Don't Buy" 2010-03-18

Don't waste your money. This is a toy, and not a very good one.

"Never worked" 2010-03-14
By Snavely (NC)
Don't waste your time. I have been sewing for over 30 years and thought this would be a good easy to travel with machine. After threading it would make two stitches and jam. I would rethread and get two more stitches and it would jam again.....over and over.......I wasted two hours of my life trying to get this thing to work before packing it back up and returning it.

"Just what I needed" 2010-03-08
By D. Jaaster (Los Angeles)
My sewing machine died. I cleaned out a lot of dust, used WD-40, but the feeder wouldn't feed. At 76 I didn't want to spend money on a new machine, so I went to Amazon. There was my Sew & Sew at a great price to help me with split seams, etc. It will work on battery or electricity. It will even do serious sewing if I ever get up enough ambition to take on a big project. I grabbed my debit card, picked up the phone on a Wednesday morning. My machine arrived that Thursday afternoon. I can't ask for better service.

"It is good for cotton fabric only" 2010-02-06
By Uttam K. Gupta (CA USA)
It is good for small job work and even on cotton fabric only and it doesn't work properly on silk fabric. I wouldn't recommend this item. I am going to return it.

"At first, a great deal!" 2010-04-08
By Mer (Redondo Beach, CA)
I purchased this machine to use while visiting my daughter in another state. I used the machine to make a shirt with buttons and an apron out of canvas. I was quite impressed with the quality of the stitches for such an inexpensive machine. It did a great job sewing through multiple layers of canvas and the button holes were perfect! Then, before packing it up, I decided to check out the bobbin case and clean up any lint. It was nearly impossible to remove the plate over the bobbin. The plate is in two parts, one is plastic. I have to admit, that I did not look in the Owner's Manual, but figured removing the plate is a no brainer. (I have used dozens of machines over the years and have been sewing for over 40 years!) Eventually I was able to remove the plates and reassemble everything. I am concerned that routine maintenance on this machine will be a problem. Only time will tell!!

"Great sewing machine" 2010-04-02
By Y. Indria
I've been using this sewing machine for a month now, and i really like it. I've tried to sew with several kinds of fabrics, jersey, cotton, flannel and jeans and found no problem at all.

I was a little afraid before buying this machine because of some reviews about how the lower thread gets loose when using several layers or thick fabrics, well it never happened to me! It is true that there is no way to adjust the tension of lower thread, but you don't need it anyway, all you have to do is adjust the upper thread.

Another feature i love is the quick-set bobbin so i don't need to open the attachment everytime i need to change the bobbin, and as it is transparent i can see how much thread i have left.

It also has a needle threader, i tried several times, not a single success, but i don't need it anyway.

I wish Brother would provide adapter for 220V so it can be useful outside the US too.

"Great machine for beginner" 2010-03-23
By Jreyes (New York)
I have never owned a machine before. I did my research & thought this was a good machine to start with. So far it has been great!! The threading of the bobbin is so easy to do & the instructions are clear. I was set up to sew in Less than 10 minutes! So far. Have hemmed about 10 jeans and was amazed @ how fast the machine works. I like the fact that it has the free arm function to be able to do this kind of work without having to struggle with the pants to turn. I plan on doing many more projects with this machine!

"good, but FAST!" 2010-03-16
By Mel A. (Portland, OR)
I bought this as a beginner's machine, and so far it has worked great. Threading the machine is super easy and the bobbin just drops in. My only problem is that it goes too fast! It has a pedal, but if you try to press lightly it only makes a noise like it's revving up, then away it goes! Once it starts up you can slow it down, but there's no initial ease into the stitch. I bought a magnetic seam guide which helped greatly with keeping the stitches straight. It doesn't come with a case, though, so you have to buy one separately. Definitely worth the price and delivered very quickly, but I will probably upgrade once my skills improve.

"Great for beginner and basics - perhaps even more!" 2010-04-06
By Keith W. Robinson (Arizona, USA)
I purchased this machine in late 2004, it is now 2010, and it is holding up remarkably. No broken peices, loud noises. I didn't use to use it to much, just to make a random garmet here and there, but I have recently found myself sitting in front of it almost every night and it works great. If you don't need a lot of technology and really aren't wanting to invest a lot, I certainly recommend this one, it's easy for even me to use!

"Great Machine, Great Value" 2010-03-31
By Allison (Buffalo, NY USA)
I bought this machine as a beginner. It was very easy to use once I figured out exactly how to get the lower and upper thread to hook together. I admit I had to watch a bunch of YouTube videos to figure it out. It wasn't really explained as clearly as it should have been in the manual. But once I figured that out, it was so easy to use. The machine is great and for the money, it's perfect. I was going to buy a cheaper machine but the reviews for anything cheaper than this one were terrible. So I decided to spend the extra money and I'm so happy I did!

"A very pleasent surprise" 2010-03-28
By Russell A. Duncan (Dallas, TX)
This was purchase to be a gift. My understanding from the recepient is that the sewing machine far exceeded expectations for capabilities, build quality and ease of use. I used other reviews on Amazon.com to make this selection and those reviews well define the features. Since this was a gift I can't address those features but based on the feedback from my wife, I hit a home run.

"Worst machine ever." 2010-03-24
By A. Deuel
I was given this machine for Christmas. I was able to sew about two dresses for my daughter before the thing broke. The feed dogs stopped working entirely, they dropped below the plate and upon servicing I found out that someone had forgotten to put in about 3 screws that were suppose to hold the feed dog lever up. When they went to service it things started falling out of the machine! Rather than pay to have it rebuilt, I decided to throw it out and purchase a Singer. I will never, ever buy another Brother machine.

"very happy" 2010-03-22
By L. lonstein
I read the reviews for this sewing machine and evenghough they were not good I decided to buy it anyway - I have been pleasantly surprised. I have never owned a sewing machine before. I found the instructions easy to understand and follow. I threaded it easily and have been sewing happily ever since, without any problem.

"I Love My Sewing Machine" 2010-04-15
By R. Filipek (Hicksville, NY)
I've had this machine for two years now. It's easy to use, has lots of options for a casual sewer, and the computerized stitch selector is great. It comes with everything that you need to sew basic items: regular foot, zipper foot, embroidery foot, and a button foot. The digital screen tells you which foot to use for the stitch that you select. I have not yet tried quilting with this machine, but I have made clothing for myself and for my infant daughter. I love playing around with it and testing out different decorative stitches.

Well made machine with easy to use features. Instructions were easy to follow for thread winding , loading and first time use. Very quiet and smooth operation, much less motor/machine noise than older Singer products used in the past.

"GET METAL LOWER BOBBINS" 2010-04-12
By Ekat (Costa Mesa, CA)
I got it as a gift (purchased from amazon.com)

I had machine for a week before I was ready to give up - the lower thread was bunching, or it looked like tension was not right, or it would skip - long story short - lower thread was terrible! Then I read somewhere that the reason was the cheap plastic lower bobbins it came with. I went and got a set of 4 metal ones at a local store for $1.79 - AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!! It solved everything! People, don't send your machine back - it is wonderful devise for the price. Just get metal bobbins! I made some outdoors seat cushions (thick outdoors fabric) and a very thin chiffon dress - it turned out beautiful, no tension problems what so ever

"Okay Machine" 2010-04-12
By K. Williams (Michigan)
I purchased this machine about a week ago and it came in the mail 5 days ago. According to the reviews it is presented as a pretty good machine for the cheap price. But as the saying goes...You get what you pay for...after hooking up the machine and sewing on it for 2 days. This machine is re-packaged headed back to the "refund' Department. It sews very hard (not smooth) the thread was bunching up and getting caught. The worst part was trying to sew a standard pair of jeans and the needle broke. Then after switching to a heavier needle, the machine kept reading "error". If you have very light weight things to sew with cheap fabric then this could be a good machine. If you like to take in or reconstruct store ready garments then PLEASE save your money and invest in something a litle more durable. This machine received 3 stars because it has some cool features (computerized features) like sewing without the foot pedal, one-touch needle button....the machine is cheaply made and you can tell this by the weight and the accessories of the machine. Not durable at all. I went yesterday and purchased a Viking 116 machine and the differences between the Viking (top of the line) and this Brother machine aren't even comparable.

"Just got it today." 2010-04-12
By Heather (Virginia)
I have a 6 year old manual Singer, and I'm a novice quilter. Being faced with spending big bucks on different accessories for the Singer, I saw this for such a good price, with everything I wanted.

I have only used it for one day, but this is my review so far:

I'm technologically challenged, but if you read the manual, you can get through the steps pretty easily.

pros:

Lightweight: this will be great for taking it to classes.

Smooth and quiet stitching: my singer was a bit loud and jerky, and I like this one better.

Quilting options: comes with the extension table, walking foot, quilting(darning) foot, and the ability to do a 1/4" seam. buying all these things for a machine you already have would again be more than this machine itself!

Lots of stitches: I've only had basic, so the myriad of stitch choices is fun.

cons:

dim lighting: it says it has super bright lighting...just not so. you will need another light source.

portability: yes, it is lightweight, but plastic cover is just a cover, not a carrying case. you have to remove your spool of thread to get it on. the compartment for holding all the other little pieces is a little pitiful, and difficult to get on with the pouch of stuff in it. if you want to lug this baby to classes you'll need something to carry your other accessories, the extension table, cords, etc.

Default stitch setting: if you turn off the machine, it always goes back to a default, which you cannot change, so you have to remember to reset everything where you had it.

Overall so far: I like it so far. I think you get an awful lot for the money with this one. It has a lot of features that you'd pay a lot more for with higher-end machines. It has a few annoying quirks, but nothing that would make me return it so far.
