"Just bought this one" 2010-05-03
By Charlene (Modesto, California)
I just bought this machine, and love it. It runs so smoothly. The bobbin has not jammed on it, as others have complained. Perhaps they had the bobbin threaded backwards? That will make it jam up, because I've used older machines that have the same bobbin assembly, and you have to have the tension right, and the thread going in the correct direction, which is clockwise.

"Good serviceable machine" 2010-03-28
By Natalie BC
I bought this machine yesterday. This is the first machine I've ever owned, and I hadn't even used one for about 15 years or so. On the whole, the machine is very easy to set up, although I was a little confused about how to set up the bobbin properly. Once I figured out how to properly thread the bobbin case, though, I was all set. I was able to sew 6 pocket linings in less than an hour with very little trouble. Time will tell if any other problems arise, but so far I think it's a good deal for a solid machine.

"terrible!" 2010-02-19
By Jamie A. Lahrman (Indianapolis, IN)
This was my first sewing machine of my own. I have been using my mom's.It was easy to set-up but the thread jammed in the bobbin even after adjusting the tension several times.

I wish I would have seen the reviews before purchasing this item. I could have avoided a lot of frustration.I am taking it back to Target today!

"Not worth the trouble!" 2010-01-18
By Mikayla's mom (California)
I received this for Christmas from my husband. My first time using this machine was nothing but frustrating! I tried to sew my daughter a simple skirt that should have taken less than an hour... 5 hours later my mom had to finish it for me on her machine. I encountered the same problems with the bobbin that others voiced- and yes- I fixed the tension. I tried emailing Singer to find out about the many problems and three weeks later I have yet to hear back from them... I returned the machine the following day. Don't waste your money on this machine unless you have a lot of spare time to fix it's many problems.

"Use the tension adjusters!" 2009-11-22
By goodstuff (San Francisco)
This is my first sewing machine, the first time I've used one. I love it, and hate to see it's rating so low due to reports of bobbin jamming. None of the 3 complaints mentioned that they even attempted to adjust the upper or lower tension adjustments. My machine jammed up the first time I used it but I read the instructions and adjusted the tensions- problem solved. Adjusting the lower bobbin tension is a touchy feely operation, but not hard to do. From the instructions- "To test the bobbin thread tension, remove the bobbin case and bobbin and hold it by suspending it by the thread. Jerk it once or twice. If the tension is correct, the thread will unwind by about an inch or two. If the tension is too tight, it does not unwind at all. If the tension is too loose, it will drop too much. To adjust, turn the small screw on the side of the bobbin case." There is a screwdriver included to make this adjustment. It clamps the thread, so a thicker or thinner thread could mean an adjustment is necessary. Mine needed to be loosened for the first spool of thread I used. This bobbin case is polished stainless steel, so it's not wearing out soon. I guess the screw might get loose someday, my local Jo-Ann fabric store sells new complete bobbin cases for $2.99. The upper thread tension dial requires a lot of adjustment depending on the work. A sewing machine isn't a hair dryer. They are complex weird monsters and there is a learning curve, no way around it. You've got to tune em like a guitar. This machine is heavy and stable and has a pleasant look and feel. It disturbs me there is no inclusion of oil or lubrication instructons. I doubt it's never necessary, so I got a tube of Official Singer Oil, a very thick oil with a look and smell like melted butter. I recomend it. I've only had my 2250 for a week. 5 stars so far.

"Would be great if it worked" 2010-01-20
By G. Weakliem (Denver, Co United States)
Maybe you will have better luck then we did. Our machine did not work. We even took it to someone who repairs small electronics and they said that it is not repairable. So we are returning it. I liked the idea of the slower speed and shild safe foot guard. But this bobbin casing is loose and does not allow it to sew, it just jams up. Very frustrating.

"Buyer beware." 2010-01-02
By D. Hobart (Portland, Maine, USA)
My daughter (7) really wanted this sewing machine. We got it home, unpacked it, finished the stitch on the little blue cloth that comes already sewn and then proceeded to make one of the projects. Well, that's where the fun STOPPED. The stitch wouldn't hold (it wouldn't even stitch). The needle would go through, but it didn't make a stitch. We re-threaded the needle (which is nearly impossible using the provided tool and given the fact that the needle doesn't come up high enough to have a straight shot through), and tried to re-thread the bobbin, but the bobbin thread would not go where it was supposed to (the directions seem vaguely clear, if not contradictory, but following them does not produce the results they promise). I spent about 90 minutes looking for additional help online, and trying over and over to re-thread the needle and bobbin, all to no avail. It broke my daughter's heart to tell her it was going back. This is a poorly built waste of $$.

"So cheap it doesn't work" 2009-12-27
By K. Jackson
Two adults, including an experienced sewer, could not get the machine to stitch properly. The problem is with the thread tensioners, the spool tensioner can't be tuned finely enough one 1/8th turn clockwise and it is way to tight, the otherway its too loose. The bobbin tensioner is so loose it doesn't tension at all.I am surprised Singer would put out a product this low quality.

"Get a regular machine" 2009-11-25
By Brenda (Michigan)
This is a horrible introduction to sewing! It is impossible to thread and keep threaded - basically it embodies everything that is difficult about sewing with NONE of the fun! I wish we had put the money toward an adult sewing machine because while I dont mind helping her, she definitely loses interest watching me try to thread it over and over! Dont buy this!

Great starter machine. Had some trouble threading it the first time, but it works really well and is very safe for young ones to learn on.

It's sturdy quiet and has adjustable foot pressure - great machine - the new version is the Janome DC 4030. I think you'll be very happy if you purchase. It meets all my needs except embroidery. . .

What is Refurbished?

When a product is refurbished, it is made to look like and operate as a brand new item should. Many times it is as simple as the box being opened by mistake or for quality checks. Once the box has been opened, that item cannot be sold as new. Items with serious malfunctions are not refurbished, it would cost too much to refurbish them to 'like new' condition. Each refurbished item we feature is completely inspected, rerun down the production line and triple checked for quality before being packed and shipped. Most of the time the only difference between new and refurbished is the brown box and the lower price, which is your gain as an educated consumer.

"Great machine for the money" 2010-02-15
By writercat (Great Lakes)
I have sewn for 30+ years, on and off. But my old machine was just that - old. Nothing fancy either, so I looked around and fell for a really expensive Singer with tons of stitches and every bell and whistle. I was so excited! Until I tried to actually sew on the thing. It was near impossible to adjust the tension for lightweight fabrics - which is half of what I work with. The machine was too persnickety for anything lighter than cotton broad cloth, and jammed even on that. After two jams, the timing was all off and back it went.

Disappointed I searched again, but this time I was not willing to spend a small fortune. This machine does not disappoint though. It has enough features to get your project done, easy-to-use and works on every type of fabric I've tried so far - without changing the tension.

The drop in bobbin is new to me, but I soon came to find that to be one of THE best features. On my old machine and the one I returned, the front load bobbin was tricky getting in. In fact on the pricey Singer that was one of the worst parts of setting up to sew. Although that one had a low bobbin warning and the Brother does not, you can see if the thread is low through the clear plate - and the Brother will not make you crazy by stopping every few stitches to tell you your bobbin is low.

I would give this machine 5 stars, but it really seems more suited to a beginner - at the price, it's a great starter. I doubt you could quilt with it as small as the opening is. And the speed is a little hard to control - I like the on-machine speed control of the more expensive models and did not notice this one lacked that when I bought it.

Other features better machines have are storage that opens while on the machine and a reverse you don't have to hold.

How much more do you pay for all that on the better machines though? I guess it's a moot question if that machine can't sew your blouse.

Overall, I'm really happy with this thing. I'm impressed with this quality and funtionality in this price range.

Here's a tip, if you do get loopy stitches - try unloading and replacing the bobbin, then turn the machine off and on. It may look like it's in there fine, but a few wraps of thread may have wound wrong. In all the sewing I've done, I had that loopy thing one time, and that solved it.

"loved it - until problems with the tension" 2010-02-04
By Mark Twain
I got it as a gift, and was thrilled, I sewed hot/cold corn bags all weekend for family. Then I went to sew an apron, and I started seeing loops in the thread. I tried to adjust the tension, but no matter what I set it to, it didn't change anything. I returned the machine and got another thinking it was a fluke - since all reviews have been positive. After sewing an apron for my daughter without any problems, I have started sewing my own.. full of with thread loops. :( again, the tension has stopped working.

"Purchased as a gift" 2010-02-01
By G. L. Davis (Tega Cay, SC)
After previously purchasing a Brother Sewing Machine for my personal use more than a year ago, I just knew I couldn't go wrong shopping for another one through Amazon when I learned of my daughter's need for one. She lives in Florida so it had to be shipped to a different address. The delivery was timely and the product arrived in tact. My daughter has only just begun to use it for mending items she couldn't bring herslf to throw out. Now, after having been repaired, those items have been given 'new life' for either personal wear or to donate. She is practicing with every feature in preparation for making her own daughter's prom formal this year. My thanks to Amazon for carrying such top-of-the-line products.

"Great purchase!" 2009-09-07
By H. G. Cazares (Baltimore, MD USA)
We purchased a refurbished CE-5000PRW, at the beginning I wasn't sure about not buying a brand new one but after reading reviews and realizing the guarantee was the same as for a new machine we decided to buy it.

After we got it we have not had a single complain, it was a gift for my wife and she loves it, like some other people say, the automatic Threading System is a little tricky at the beginning but once you get it it works great.

Bottom line it was a great purchase, the vendor was efficient, the delivery was fast and without any problem, I recommend it 100%

"Love it!" 2009-08-19
By Online Shopper
I absolutely LOVE this machine! It is so lightweight and easy to move around, yet is sturdy enough to easily sew through multiple layers of fabric and batting. I have been quilting potholders with it, and it works like a dream. The owner's manual that comes with it is full of great information, especially if you are a beginner. There are some areas in the manual that could use a little help, but in general it is pretty great. The automatic needle threader is fantastic.

"Do not buy this sewing& embroidery machine" 2010-03-11
By L. Snelling
I have had this machine for 4 years now and as much as I have used it (approximately 10 hours a week) I like it fine, but if something goes wrong with the software it's awful. Both the original installation software and the HyperFont are almost impossible to install; many hours have been wasted trying to get it all set up. Really, it's beyond horrible to work with and both my husband and I are VERY computer literate. At one point I almost threw it out the front door for a snow plow to run over! The software isn't compatible with Vista or XP, you have to install patches, but then it's still a complete hit or miss if it will work. I wish I had purchased something with the embroidery computer included rather than having to hook up to an external computer. I originally wanted an external hookup so I could download images and fonts from the internet, but you can do that with the right built in computer functionality.

"Awesome price, great results" 2009-06-03
By Gila Von Meissner (Hamburg)
Before my Singer, I had only used a machine twice in my life, so when it arrived, I got a pleasant surprise - I was off sewing within minutes, getting great results and having loads of fun. I especially love that threading is so easy, and you learn quickly where to be careful to avoid thread breakage.

Changing to embroidery unit - no problem, though getting the right foot attached usually takes me a sec. I daringly started off with one of my own Embird designs... without a glitch, even without the use of stabilizer, just straight onto firm cotton.

I love that the machine is easy to use, especially the Futura software. Its 24 standard stitches are more than enough, its embroidery is great. And my absolute favorite is the hoop size! Other machines with a similar (still higher) price tag come with a 4"x4" hoop, this one has two hoops with a maximum of 5"x7". You might not think you will need this, but you will - either when doing multiple designs on one large hoop, or just embroidering longer names.

The manual could be improved at times, but I hardly ever needed it.

I hear people complaining about broken thread - honestly, just like with every machine, you just need to know the Singer's quirks.

During the first 3-5 stitches of every color, hold the upper thread in the back, and no false thread breakage will occur. If it still does, thread the whole thing again and you will be fine. Don't use pre-wound bobbins without stabilizer. It will give you trouble after only 1/3 of the bobbin is empty, and since the bobbin case is plastic, you really shouldn't use metal bobbins either. Just wind your own bobbins when needed, it is easy enough.

Make sure that you use good embroidery yarn; every machine has brands it doesn't like. I am currently extremely happy with the Madeira yarns.

The fact that it needs a computer next to it... You know that before buying, don't you? To me, that is not a disadvantage at all, since I appreciate the large screen, and that I can work in Embird while the machine embroiders, preparing the next project.

It really is an awesome machine for that price. In Europe, the only difference between the 150 and the 250/350 are the number of stitches and which software is included.

Since I am using Embird, I really needed nothing except the Futura software to send designs to the machine, and 24 stutches is more than enough for what I do.

I highly recommend the machine - I am utterly in love with it.

"Oh My Oh My Oh Dear!" 2009-01-22
By T. Christiansen
This machine was bought as a Christmas present for me. What firstly surprised me was this machine has to be connected to the computer or it will NOT embroider. All embroidery interacts with the computer. The first machine broke and Singer recommended it be replaced (this is after I waited forever to get help by phone). The replacement machine did "so-so" embroidery as I was not impressed with the final product of embroidery. I found the placement of presser foot lever and working on the bed of the machine was extremely awkward. The hoop had to be screwed on and off. When I tried normal sewing, kept getting thread errors and found out through Singer (another long wait on phone) the bobbin case was defective and should be replaced. This was the second machine. Was not interested in a third try. Defective machine was returned. The Singer was an immense source of frustration. Sewing should be a creative pleasurable experience and not a frustrating experience. Would I recommend this Singer? Only if you are extremely computer savvy, don't really need a tutorial, are used to awkward Singers, and not interested in a user-friendly machine. Bought the Brother 700II with the USB port and this embroidery machine has been an embroiderer's dream. The practice embroidery between the Singer and the Brother was like night and day. Give me a Brother any day of the week. I gave this machine a 2-star review as I was in a kind mood. And, by the way, I have been sewing for almost 50 years so am not new to sewing. Also, my husband was a computer programmer and his trying to "help" me figure things out with the Futura was a challenge to him too. The capabilities are there, just too bad trying to use them is so difficult and the machine is questionable as far as durability.

"Wonderful" 2009-01-14
By B. Gursky (Ia, USA)
After spending weeks reading about all the different Embroidery machines out there I purchared the Futura CE-150. Not being a person who sews everyday, I was unsure about something this new. After reading and looking at the CD that came with the unit, I was able to make a small flower. Not bad for someone who only fixed rips in clothes. After afew hours of playing around, I found the Futura, and the software easy to use.

"Great Begginners Machine!" 2010-02-17
By Poodle_Mama (Baltimore, MD)
I used to sew when I was younger, now the kids are all grown and I have more time for myself.I picked this machine for the price, simplicity, and the Brother name.So far I am very happy with this little guy. For the price it is well worth it. It took me a few tries before I was able to thread the bobbin and load it. I've gotten better at it. For me, the speed is easy to control, it takes corners really well, and I love the reverse sewing. You don't have to do anything except flip the switch.Having only ever used a straight stitch machine, I love the choice of stitches. The tension is easy to fix (I never had any luck with that before now) I have yet to use the button hole maker, and I have not sewn in a zipper, but in time I'll feel braver! My only complaint is threading the needle, my eyes aren't what they used to be. But the machine came with three needle threaders, and that helps somewhat. All in all this is a great little machine.I recommend it to any one who is just starting out, or just wants to replace an older machine.

"I love my Brother!" 2010-01-19

I bought my Brother XL 3125 as my first sewing machine. I chose it because it is a good brand, had a nice number of stitches and was very economically priced. It has done everything I have asked of it and even more! It is easy to operate and I love learning to sew on it. I think I will be using this machine for years to come!

"Great machine for the price" 2010-01-01

I bought this machine nad I really like it. I have sewm many things with it and I really have no problem with it at all. It has been able to do all that I have needed it to do. It really is a nice sewing machine an excellent for beginners as well as experienced sewers who need to do everyday sewing.

"Perfect for a bigginer!" 2009-10-06
By J. Huey
This is my 1st sewing machine. I brought it to a sewing class to learn how to sew, and it was one of the easiest and lightest. Compared to the other it's pretty quiet and doesn't "jump" or move while sewing. I bought mine from Wal-Mart and it came with a DVD on how to set up the machine, how to straight stitch, how to zig-zag stitch, sew a button and install a zipper. It's has 14 different stitches so it's not only a great machine to learn on but can be used once you learn how to sew well. I have hemmed jeans with a size 14 needle (what it comes with) with no problem, but bought a size 16 needle to make sure it doesn't brake! I love this machine and recommend it to ANYONE!

"East to use!" 2010-04-26
By Sharon Cadaret (Mojave, CA)
I had a $1200 Pfaff I bought 25 yrs ago, and wore it out! I wanted a new sewing machine, but didn't want to spend a lot. I knew that Brother machines were highly rated, and so I decided on a Brother. It was scarey buying a machine I had not personaly seen demonstrated and tried out, but being disabled and living a 40 mi from the stores made it necessary. With grandchildren now, I thought that it would be fun to have some embroidery functions on it, but didn't need a lot of fancy things. For $499 I got a really nice machine. As noted by other reviews, the manual is very easy to understand-Yeah! Even if you aren't comfortable with computerized functions, this is very easy to use. I have not done embroidery yet, but I made a dress with 9 buttons down the front, and would normally dread making button holes, but it was so easy and the button holes turned out perfectly! This sewing machine makes sewing enjoyable again! This is a great sewing machine for anyone, and you get a lot for the $$$!

I LOVE THIS SEWING MACHINE!

"Sewing is now fun!" 2010-04-26
By M. Neely (mississippi)
I have been sewing on a Singer for a few years now. Just stuff for around the house. Pillows, curtains, etc. I have been doing toddler clothes for the last year and was ready to have a machine that would monogram. Sewing is so much more fun and easy with this machine! I am finishing outfits sooooo much faster! The embroidery option is wonderful and easy to learn.

The 5 fonts that come with the machine are fine, the embroidery and applique patterns are not really anything that I would want or use on a regular basis. I hate that I have to buy the Brother software ($115) to get really cute appliques and fonts converted to my machine but that is just the way it is.

Overall, very easy to use and a great price point.

If you are an expert seamstress you will enjoy this machine. My major concern was I was missing a part & could get absolutely NO response from Brother. Made the MAJOR mistake of waiting too long to contact J&R Music & Computor World & now they are CHARGING me a 15% RESTOCKING FEE!!! I didn't keep the boxes (was a Xmas present) so it cost me $99 to mail it back!!!!! MAKE SURE THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT & YOU'RE SURE YOU'RE UP TO A MAJOR CHANGE IN SEWING BEFORE YOU ORDER!!

"Not My Brother" 2010-01-28
By Eileen C. Pluta (Wyncote, PA United States)
As others said it started out promising. Then the silver prongs that the cord plugs into went into the machine I would have to pull them out with pliers to plug it in. I was in the middle of Christmas sewing so I couldn't take it in for repair. Every time the cord was touched it would disconnect, very annoying in the middle of an embroidery project. I took it in the 23rd of December and still do not have it back, January 28th. They are waiting for parts. I would never recommend this machine or any Brother.

This machine is just what I needed to replace my 1970s machine. It is perfect for my everyday projects with embroidery as a bonus to broaden my sewing skills. Compact enough to store on a bookcase shelf. Easy to operate and the manual was clear enough to get me off to a good start.

"Easy to use" 2010-05-14
By Tweety Bird
I have sewn for years on a regular machine, but have always been hesitant to buy a serger because of the cost, and because I have seen how hard they are to thread correctly. However, this one caught my attention because the reviews said it was easy to use, & because of the low price, I was willing to take a chance. The reviews are accurate. It comes already threaded, so you can start sewing right away. After I read the instruction book and watched the handy CDs, I was able to make two pairs of pants immediately, and was able to thread the machine correctly on my first try, with only a bit of puzzling about the loopers. It's really quite simple and fast, a pleasant surprise. The accessory bag did not have a screwdriver, but the instruction book said that it was included. I would recommend this for anyone learning how to serge.

"Best Serger" 2010-05-07
By R. Gupta (California)
I purchased this serger based on the reviews. I was not disappointed, this machine is easy to use,and quiet. I had never used a serger before and found it easy to learn and operate. Finished my project- 25 table toppers made of raw silk. They came out beautiful and look professional. The reviewers were correct!!!!!!! This machine is great, can't wait to start a new project.

"Great value!!!" 2010-05-03
By T. Childers (Utah)
I love my new serger! There are so many features that this one has that I never dreamed I would be able to get on the money I had budgeted to spend on a serger. I had to thread it, and I did it! I also like the fact you can use regular sewing machine needles with this model, plus it came with lots of extras. The cd's are very helpful in learning all the things you can do.

"Very Happy with my Singer 7463" 2010-01-30
By Karen Webster (Colorado)
I am very happy with my Singer 7463 Confidence Sewing Machine. After purchasing a computerized Brother machine that broke after 4 days, I bought the Singer 7463. I was replacing a Singer Fashionmate 362 that I had since I was a teenager. I wanted more stitch options. The Brother was so fragile that I soon realized that I would not be able to sew all that I wanted. The Singer has great stitch options, and it is very solid. I have been using a few times a week since I bought it just after Christmas. I love that it is solid, easy to thread, and the light is good. It did not come with a screw driver- and the one from my previous machine worked fine. But it must be small and short to work in this machine. I recommend purchasing it too- well worth it. The feet that comes with it are good for sewing and quilting. It is light weight- has a handle that is easy to use. My last machine I could not carry- this one would travel easily - and I look forward to taking to friends' houses. I sew on every fabric you can think of including paper. This machine will last me an easy 20-30 more years, easily. The only other machine I plan to add in the next 5 years is an embroidery/quilting machine, but I would still need a "basic" machine like the Singer 7463, that is so much more than what I replaced. I will have a hard time with anything that is not a Singer- they are such good machines.

"Poorly Manufactured" 2009-12-31
By A. Aversa
Ever since this sewing machine was brand new, it has made rattling sounds and jams to a halt, signaling a beeping alarm, especially when hemming denim. Even an experienced sewing lady at Jo-Ann's was surprised that it did not sew through certain parts of denim hems. Now, after two months of okay sewing, the part that rotates around the bobbin has gone so completely out of alignment with the rest of the machine that when the needle goes down it hits rock bottom, bends like crazy laterally, and breaks the needle. This particular machine had the same problems that taniamc mentions in her review. Maybe the Singer 7442 or Brother XL2600I is higher quality.

"Maybe for the occasional mending..." 2009-09-06
By taniamc
The first one I got was in Jan '09. It lasted me until June, and I started having a lot of problems with it. It started making terrible noises, sounded awful, wouldn't sew straight, stitches were inconsistent, tension was messing up intermittently I had to stop using it for vacation, got back and it was worse than ever. I sent it in for service (it took 3 weeks) and they sent it back saying they had adjusted the tension and found nothing wrong. It worked quietly for about 10 minutes, and then started freaking out again. I took it back and they swapped it out for a new one . The new one started having problems with feeding the fabric and rattling by the second day. The pressure on the presser foot was off, and there was no way of adjusting it. No way to lower the feed dogs either. I ended up returning it for a refund.

I was really disappointed with the quality of this machine. I wanted it to work well, and it did... briefly. It seems Singer has really lowered the bar with their quality standards.

"GREAT SEWING AT THIS PRICE" 2008-12-14
By PSimon (NYC)
This is a remarkable machine especially for this price. it's good to see that Singer is still innovating and making sewing machines that are affordable yet full of useful features. The only thing to be aware of is that you need to buy the hard case cover separately.

"SAMSUNG TV (SOUND PROBLEMS ON YOURS??)" 2010-02-12
By Patricia A. Werhan (N. Carolina)
I have bought two Samsung TVs this year, a 46" and a 26". With the first one I had low sound volume after the dealer set it up and left. I went back to Best Buy where I got it, asking how to get better volume, and they said, "You don't buy these large flat screen TVs for sound, just for the picture, then you add a sound system." OK. So I bought a sound system. While trying to connect it up, I happened into the Menu for the Samsung and found that the "Auto Volume" was off. When I turned it on, I had plenty of volume and good sound, so I took the sound system back, got a refund and have been happy with the sound on my Samsung ever since. Low and behold, when I bought the second Samsung (THIS ONE FROM AMAZON), I had low volume, and sure enough, when I checked the "Auto Volume" in the menu, it was off. Turned it on, I have plenty of volume and good sound. It makes me wonder if the places that sell Samsung make sure the "Auto Volume" is off before they deliver it, so dummies like me will come back and buy a sound system. I don't know. What do you think? Anyway, we really enjoy these two TVs and have NO problems!! GET ONE!

"Major problems with bobbin case and tension" 2010-01-30
By Kailua Mom (Yokosuka, Japan)
I've had this machine for about 2 years and while I've been able to create lots of projects, a recurring problem has been inconsistent thread tension. Most recently, the bobbin case moves too much and the thread gets jammed and bunched up. I am probably using the wrong bobbin case and some of my thread are of poor quality, so these are likely contributing factors. I am now in the market for a new machine!

"Brother Sewing Machine" 2010-01-21
By Sandra C. Chun
This is the first Brother sewing machine I have ever owned; all others were Singer. Takes a little getting used to. So far so good. Good value for the price I paid.

"Basic Machine, A Little Temperamental" 2009-11-23
By Kelli Adams
GENERAL: I have had some issues with the bottom thread getting bunched up and gathering up the fabric as I sew. The material/fabric has actually gotten stuck down into where the needle goes up and down.

This has happened only a handful of times, hence the three stars. For basic, occasional needs, the machine usually performs fine and is really user-friendly. The bobbin is easy to load (one of my pet peeves!), the sewing is smooth and the machine is pretty quiet. It's also light-weight which is great for me because I don't have a devoted place to leave it out. I keep mine on a shelf above the washer and dryer and it stores easily and I don't have any trouble moving it around when I have a project.

MORE DETAIL: I have never been able to fix the bunching issue, I just have to take a break and walk away for a while (sometimes minutes, sometimes days) and try again. I've tried adjusting everything there is to adjust and nothing seems to work. I've also been online looking for fixes and referred to the manual.

Only once has the bunching issue been catastrophic (I hemmed all the dresses for my sister's wedding and that's when it went haywire on me! One layer of a bridesmaid dress was very sheer and it actually tore the material! I was in a time-crunch and ultimately had to borrow someone else's machine).

I got this machine for Christmas a few years ago. I do not do any specialty sewing.

"Great machine, does what I need" 2009-09-15
By Sarah J. Holdren
This is a great machine, and so far, I haven't found any cons about it. I got it on a gold box deal, for a great price. I used to sew quite a bit, using my Mom's old Singer machine, and had been looking on and off for one of my own. I don't do a lot of sewing right now, but I can see doing more now.

"You get what you paid for" 2010-04-06
By Arlene
I bought this machine with a USB port. I don't know if I am dense or what, but it took me a while to figure out how to use it. Once I figured out the embroidery part, it was ok. Then it started acting up. The fabric got cut on the teeth and had to be cut out. I had to take the bobbing mechanism completely apart to untangle all the thread caught in the bobbin. On another ocassion, it indicated that the embroidery was completed, when it was only half way done. Putting the embroidery foot is a bit difficult to position and sometimes it falls, due to the vribrations of the machine. I dont know why I have broken 4 embroidery needles in less than a week. I am still trying to figure that one out. I will probably keep it because I am not planning to do much embroidery and I don't want to spend 2k on an embroidery machine. The sewing part works fine. I suppose is a crab shoot, when the embroidery part works, it does a nice job, but when it goes bad, it really goes bad.

"Fantastic deal for a Great Product!" 2010-03-23
By S. Loria (Florida, USA)

The Brother SE350 is a great computerized sewing machine. You are getting a great machine for the price. I have researched many sellers and even ebay for used and new machines of this model. Ultimately, I decided the best deal was to go with a brand new machine from Amazon, with free shipping. This put the machine at a cheaper price than Wal-Mart! Also, I feel better about my purchase by going with a new machine because of the manufacturer's warranty. Amazon shipped the item quickly and securely.

"Great Machine for intermediate sewing" 2010-03-19
By J. Malucci (Philadelphia, PA)
This was a gift for my wife and here is her review:

I am no professional, but felt like I had outgrown my very basic machine. Being quite budget conscious, I couldn't even be tempted by the Vikings and Berninas of the world so when I found this I thought it was a perfect blend of features and price. I like that I can experiment with monogramming and embroidery as well. The auto threader and auto cutter are awesome! So easy to use and so convenient. I've already purchased the PED-basic cord so that I could download more (free!) designs as well as more fonts.

So far, so good on this machine!

"The Best Deal" 2010-02-15
By Alexander (Huntington Beach, CA, USA)
The machine is just wonderful - for the price you want to pay it's the best deal of both sewing and embroidery you can get. Although the machine arrived in an open box, it works great and I have never had any problems with it. For somebody who has used a sewing machine before, this one is extremely easy to learn. In addition, this Brother's creation will be a dream for those who used to work on simple mechanical machines. Some its functions make your sewing life so much easier! And the embroidery unit is so pleasant and easy to work with. Moreover, you can download quite a few designs from Brother website for free!Although you still will need stabilizers, software, threads, more bobbins, and of course feet and designs, it is really a sweet deal for the money it costs.

Beware when purchasing any products from Singer online. Your machine will not have a valid warranty. Also beware their customer service hours-- 8:30am - 4pm CT Monday through Friday and wait times are upwards of 30 minutes.

The needle arm on this machine did not line up with the bobbin hole rendering the machine unusable.

"Great sewing machine for beginners!" 2010-02-27
By Amanda Currier (Nashua, NH, US)
I haven't really sewn anything in 15 years or so, but lately I've been wanting to try it again, so I bought myself this machine based on the reasonable price and the reputation of the Singer name. I'm very pleased with this sewing machine. The instruction manual was easy to understand and had good illustrations, and I was set up and sewing in no time. I might invest in a hard case at some point, but it's nice that it comes with a canvas cover, which at least keeps my toddler's hands away from dangerous needles. I have already completed several projects in under a week, and I look forward to many more!

"love my first sewing machine" 2010-01-29
By boomer sooner (OKC)
i bought this machine simply because i didn't want to take my clothes (less expensive summery items like maxi dresses) to an alteration place because i didn't want to end up paying extra $$$ for something i just got for a great deal on so hence my first (inexpensive) sewing machine. i had absolutely no sewing experience. i didn't even take home ec while in school so naturally it was initially difficult but the instruction manual was an easy read and after some trials and errors i was able to hem my own stuff so i am very pleased with this purchase. i definitely look forward to learning more so i can do other projects with my singer!!
