I tried a couple of times, but this wont sew any kind of fabric. I think that it does not have enough power to actually do it. Really regret buying this.

Amazon.com Review

A good starter machine for garment construction and mending, this sewing machine from Brother includes 25 built-in stitches. These range from zigzag to shell tuck to blind hem settings, and there's also an automatic four-step buttonhole function. In addition, a twin needle setting lets you sew a double line with two colors of thread for a smart decorative touch. The machine's design and features are straightforward and user-friendly, with some settings--stitch length and width--automatically set for simplified operation. It also sews in reverse and has dial-adjusted tension for tidy work. Sophisticated home tailors will find this machine too basic, but occasional and beginning sewers should get plenty of use from it and not much frustration.
Threading the machine is fairly simple, and winding the bobbin is speedy. The sewing machine's work surface switches from flat to free arm for cuffs and pant legs, and the interchangeable feet have a snap-on construction. An integrated storage area keeps extra feet, needles, and bobbins tidy. Built with a handle and a work light for ease and convenience, the sewing machine comes with a zipper foot, a buttonhole foot, a button-sewing foot, a set of needles, a twin needle, a set of bobbins, and a darning plate. Brother includes a 1-year warranty. --Emily Bedard

"Horrible." 2009-12-16
By Mamasan (Hawaii)
Cheaply made and difficult to use! The threading mechanism is cumbersome; it requires a pair of tweezers since the movable arm does not come high enough to get the thread in. This is either a defect of this particular machine, or the entire model. The sewing thread and bobbin thread often tangle and jam up the machine, making a simple mending job into a mess. I have tried adjusting tension but there is no remedy to this situation. I do NOT recommend this machine.

"Do not buy it!!!" 2008-12-26
By Suzanne M. Bray
This machine is WORTHLESS. But I did get it at a fairly cheap price it was not the cheapest. The machine has classic "nesting" near the bobbin. Also there is something horribly horribly wrong with the tension. I have knotting on both sides, it's ridiculous. The machine can not sew a straight line, it takes hours to do a simple project, do not buy it.

"Great machine to beat up" 2008-09-26
By C. D. Allen (Upland, Ca USA)
I bought this machine over 4 years ago to teach myself to sew. The first thing I made on it was a little shirt for my toddler. I just jumped in and haven't stopped sewing since, with the help and support of an xperienced group of sewers online. I have 3 little girls that are very close in age and I have been using this machine for over four years to make outfits and Halloween costumes for them. I have sewn everything from denim to linen, thick ruffles, layers of tulle, full, gathered, layered ruffle skirts, and God knows what else. Oh, the peter pan collared dress jacket I made of faux leopard fur and Brown corduroy (both quite thick fabrics)-I thought that was going to destroy my machine for sure! I broke 3 hand needles in half trying to put the buttons on that jacket but my machine sewed that thing without batting an eye. There were nights that I used this machine until the sun came up the next morning. I have really given this little machine a beating and my sister has borrowed it to sew stuff (seat covers for her car made from thick fluffy towels for our hot California summers) as well. I have used the satin stitch to applique on T shirts and dresses and pants.

It still works just as hard as it did the day I brought it home. I am really surprised to see the bad reviews because I must have gotten a real gem in the one I bought. I'm using it once again to make my girls' Halloween costumes this year.

I think as long as this machine is taken care of, and the right thread ad needles are used for the right type of fabric, it is fine. I have never had any problems with the tension, or thread gathering under the fabric, or thread snapping like some of the other posters. This machine has been a serious workhorse for me. I have to say it has paid for itself many times over by now!

"Nice Sewing Machine for light work" 2008-07-15
By DM (MD USA)
This is a nice sewing machine for day to day simple work. Hard to use on think cloth and beware, trying to use it on Jeans may break it or at least Jam it. But for light work, it works flawless. Have been using more than a year and still working. Good value for price paid.

"Great first sewing machine" 2007-07-05
By C. Wight (Georgia, USA)
I bought this sewing machine after doing much research on the internet and through my local Singer dealer. All the "toy" plastic machines are just that, toys. They do not hold up and end up frustrating the new sewer because they do not work long. This machine was easy to use and had all the basic stitches so that my 7 year old granddaughter was thrilled and able to thread it and sew right away! The only thing that these sewing machines made for children do is provide fun, easy sewing projects. With scrap fabric and a little bit of time, you can come up with these easy first projects. The machine is sturdy and could last her for years and years. It cost just a little more than the toys and I highly recommend!

"Dont waste your money" 2010-06-14
By Kelley Chaplain (New Orleans, LA)
I always considered Singer to have good machines- after all, theyve been around FOREVER! Practically an american trademark no? Well, my hubby bought me this machine for christmas and I loved it at first! Was SO much better than my Pixie I was used to! Weeeeell, not long after I started using it, it started messing up. My stitches were very loose and loopy at the bottom, rethreaded helped sometimes. Adjusting the tension did nothing. Then in the middle of sewing a STRIAGHT LINE I heard a loud CLICK and it stopped sewing. The timing was off. On my brand new sewing machine. Absouletely ridiculous! Definitely NOT an operator error! I was doing nothing different at the time, just sewing a plain straight stitch using a lightweight COTTON material! >.< SO I called Singer and tried to get them to uphold thier 90 day unlimited warranty. No such luck! For them to uphold thier warranty, I would either have to spend $40 to ship it to the nearest warranty center or drive 3 hours to get there! What lousy customer service! Not helpful WHATSOEVER. FUrthermore, I was told it was MY FAULT. 0.o Defintely not my fault.

So, I went to return it to Joanns. I was given the run around and after contacting thier headquarters and the local overseer I was able to exchange it for a different machine, same model though as I was convinced it was simply a defect. Nope this one gives me the SAME problems. Same damn things. And its remarkable the thing breask RIGHT AFTER the unlimited warranty expires! I will never buy a Singer machine again. Total crap in my opinion. I now have a Janome Machine on the way after hearing wonderful things about Janome.

I learned how to sew at a VERY young age on my grandmothers commercial sewing machines. Then had a machine all growing up that flooded during a hurricane. (Brother machine). This was the first brand I have EVRE had problems with. Im very dissapointed too since I had such high expectations... Its a pretty machine, but all it gave me was frustrations and tears. Not worth it. Definitely NOT WORTH IT.

"Poor quality Singer sewing machine made in China" 2010-05-19
By Andrew
I purchased this sewing machine with high hopes and put my trust in the Singer brand name. But found instead that this is a poorly made machine that couldn't even perform at the lowest level. The metal feet that are supposed to advance the fabric don't move the cloth forward at all, but instead just go up and down, which doesn't help at all. The large dial that is suppose to change the length of the stitch didn't make any difference whatsoever. Even a simple straight stitch was a mess.Avoid this machine.

"Lots of hiccups" 2010-04-27
By Leah Halliday (KY)
I'm a novice sewer, so perhaps my experience is not typical of those who sew well and often, but I've had nothing but trouble with this machine. The birdnesting issues resurface everytime I rethread the machine, and while the machine works well for me in spurts, there is no consistency. I play with different needle sizes and with the upper thread tension, but with little luck. Even when the tension seems balanced, the machine will skip stitches randomly and occasionally reject a brand new needle (meaning that the needle will ram into some part of the bobbin case even if it doesn't look bent). I have been stranded in the middle of a project for months. In short, my experience learning to sew has been even more frustrating than I expected because of the difficulties with this machine.

"the big question: denim" 2010-05-25
By A woman
I just purchased this machine. The big question is how it handles denim, as I do a lot of altering to my jeans (taking in side seams, hems, etc.) Can anyone tell me what is the best stitch length and tension for heavier fabrics? Anybody have any trouble with this machine sewing easily through several layers of denim??

"Impressed & satisfied! 5 STARS." 2010-05-22
By Behtsee (st. louis park, Minnesota United States)
My story:

It was coming down the last couple weeks of school (Fashion Design Major) and I had 4 garments to finish and out of the blue my sewing machine broke! What was a girl with a deadline to do? Come on Amazon.com of course! Whenever I need a review I always come on here so I hunted down this here Singer Confidence. I have previously seen this on the Martha Stewart show and thought yeah.. probably too good to be true but nope! All the reviews on here gave me the green light to purchase it in a local fabric store and I couldn't have been happier about it!

This machine is incredible. I've sewed on industrial sewing machines and thought nothing could come close to the feel and smoothness that industrials have but this has proved my lil sewing heart wrong!

Once I took it out of the box I whipped out a slab of muslin to test out all the different stitches! They were all beautiful, easy easy easy to do and wow I really love the back-tack button! The buttonhole/buttons feature is really great and simple to use. I love how quick and easy winding/changing the bobbin is. I have nothing but great things to say about this machine! No cons whatsoever!

The main thing that is a highlight for me is that I was able to open this up and use it instantly without having to read the entire manual. I wound my bobbin, set my stitching length and off I went! It was such a relief to have done that because I had absolutely no time to waste!

I genuinely feel like anyone, extremely beginner or exceptionally advanced would LOVE this machine because bottom line it is an absolute dream to use. Very simple, great quality, great PRICE!, wonderful instructions if you need them, easy easy easy! easy! Just had to throw that last easy in there for good measure! :)

So long story short, I finished all my dresses for my final for school without any problems whatsoever. *Shimmy shakes*

So if you need a sewing machine that promises quality and truly give you confidence, this is the way to go.

Happy sewing!!!!!

"Love it! Second machine." 2010-01-13
By Sammy J (Illinois, USA)
I was sooo frustrated with my Singer Simple constantly jamming and having bobbin issues I almost gave up sewing. After about a year of off and on, I bought this on a black Friday sale for $199 at JoAnn's. LOVE IT! Just drop in the bobbin. I've done several projects, including sewing apparel and quilting, and it has never, ever jammed. I have had thread break once after almost doing a whole quilt (Coats thread) and never w/Gutermann.

I LOVE THIS MACHINE! It really did give me confidence, as I know the problem was not all me. Very quiet, smooth, and steady.

"Great machine!!!" 2009-06-09
By Artsymama (New Jersey USA)
It works great NOW. I purchased this machine last month and had similar issues with the straight stitching. I had changed the foot from the original one that was on it. I had never seen a closed foot like that before so I put on the one I was familiar with that came with the accessories. I tried everything to get the stitches right, including changing the machine's needle, increasing the tension, decreasing the tension, and rethreading the machine. When I was just about to give up and throw it out the window, I put the original foot back on. That did the trick! It works fine now, and I have used stitches I've never used before, like the scallop stitch to decoratively hem a sundress and the overcast seam stitch which looks professional! I have been sewing on Singer machines for 42 years and was very hesitant to purchase one of these "new fangled" computerized models. Lots of plastic, but lots of fun! I'm enjoying playing with all the stitches! I will never give up my 30 year old machine and since I started giving sewing lessons to my daughter and her friend, now they can sew together. I would definitely recommend this machine - great price for great quality.

"Major Disappointment" 2009-02-24
By Pintail (Rural PA)
I purchased this product thru Amazon, since my local retailers carry only the low end sewing machines, which didn't seem to fare well in the product reviews I found online. Previously, I had been using a Singer Touch and Sew Model 775 purchased over 30 years ago and it has seen a lot of duty. There are also no repair centers close by, so when my old machine developed multiple problems, I decided to buy a basic machine that could straight sew, zigzag, and make easy buttonholes - but not the bottom of the line machines. I couldn't find a lot of reviews on the model 7467, but the ones I did find were positive, so this seemed like a good fit eventhough I wasn't interested in all the fancy stitches. Unfornately, the machine performed well only on zigzag - the straight stitch was horrible. I tried various needles, threads, and tension settings, but once I had tried sewing a little heavier weight fabric, I couldn't get a quality straight stitch regardless of the adjustments. I returned the machine to the vendor, who promptly refunded my money - but it was a $55 expense with return shipping, insurance and restocking. I know they don't make them like they used to, but this machine was a piece of junk. The vendor said this is the first complaint he had on this model, so maybe mine was just a lemon.

"brother sewing machine" 2010-06-09

to have this machine no longer than I have, the greatest feature is the threader. I have had such a terrible time threading the needle that I have nearly stopped sewing. Now I can sew again!!! I am so glad I got this machine. I would certainly recomend this product to anyone that has trouble seeing how to thread the needle. I have had no problems with it overall.

I bought a refurbished machine for a lower price. I like it a lot - the only defect that I've found is a scratch on the stitch wheel - it doesn't bother me. To this moment I've used it for shortening my jeans and for sewing the Halloween costume. Worked great, isn't too loud.

So I returned it the second one the motor burned out in less then a week. Now the third one has absolutely no tension and won't even thread the bottom thread in the stitch. do your self a favor and Don't buy this machine

"Not worth your money" 2009-12-10
By R. Pettit (Virginia)
I bought this machine for my daughter as her first machine. It doesn't have a bobbin, and therefore doesn't create a stitch. The first piece of fabric we tried bunched and made odd stitches that came out. It was frustrating and disappointing. My boys liked the sound of the machine, and thought it was fun to push the peddle... Not what I envisioned this machine being used for! I finally took the batteries out and threw it away. If you want a first machine, look for something with a little more umph. This one isnt' it.

"Better as imaginary toy than functional sewing machine" 2009-07-28
By pleureur.
I bought this several years ago for my kids. I immediately removed the needle so that my kids would not get injured; I attempted to call the company's phone number for advice (they seemed surprised anyone would want to change a needle -- which suggests it really is not for use), but I eventually was able to by using a wrench to pop it out. After being dropped on the floor, it certainly has shown its age -- anything that can break of, has already (the handwheel, the presser foot). It is a fun item for someone to pretend to sew on, as a model sewing machine, but I don't think it is an appropriate choice for a real sewing machine. It's far too small with too few features.

"Singer Sewer" 2008-07-07

This machine was a piece of junk and truly a waste of my money, time and patience trying to get it to work. Very flimsy, not easy to use. I was very disappointed since this was suppose to be for a 5 year old. Would not recommend unless you are a seamstress and already know how to work a sewing machine.

"Take the name Singer off, for their sake" 2008-02-26
By Paula M. Newell (Arroyo Grande, CA United States)
I was really thinking it would work, rinky dink as it was. At first it seemed to but it would not sew a stitch. It moved but that is it. I felt it was safe for my daughters first machine. It was more than safe... Unfortunate that it is not even worth the $14 low sticker price. I would rather they made it sturdier and charged more. I got her a bobbin type, crossing my fingers that the Bratz machine is better...

"Great Machine for a Great Price - Highly Durable" 2010-03-03
By Amanda A (Minneapolis, MN)
I love this machine. I received it as a gift and have been sewing with it for over a year. I have made many different items using fabrics of varying thicknesses. It has always done everything I've wanted it to, and the only time I have problems is from operator error. It is a breeze to sew with and I recommend it highly!

"Had better machine" 2009-08-29
By Traveller (California USA)
I've done about 5 hours sewing on this machine and now it comes up with a F2 fault code and the machine won't work. According to the manual I have to contact the Brother service department....

I've also never encounted such problems with the cotton getting tangled around the top spool nor had the needle unthread it self. I know this can be handled by pulling enough thread through but I've done alot of sewing over the years and never had this problem. Still I guess you get what you pay for.

"A Fashion designer on a budget's DREAM" 2009-04-11
By Ray (L.A.)
This sewing machine has been nothing but amazing for the past six months I have been useing it. I have made so many things with this. It is really good at sewing thick fabrics. The machine is heavy duty yet so light. This machine is just way beyond worth the price. I purchased mine not from amazon and for $100 (its a refurb) it looks brand new and gets the job done like it was brand new. It came with quilting feet and that was a plus even though i have never used quilted vefore atleast i have the option. (I am a design major)

There are so many good things about this machine

-Lcd screen

-light weight

-heavy duty

-button holes are amazingly simple (not so much on the very expensive machines at my school)

overall this machine is great and i have had many sewing machine horror storys that cost 2-3 times this.

"Freakin' Awesome for the Beginner" 2009-11-08
By justinglen
I'm a 28 year-old male and this machine rocks! It is effortless to thread and set up the bobbin, both of which have always been the major barrier to me mending my own clothes on other machines. It sews through everything I've ever put under the needle. The pedal is precise; I can sew one stitch at a time or scream through a pant leg in 5 seconds. All of the other controls are easy to understand and use and the machine even has a built-in "beep beep" that warns me when I try to do something stupid like sew with the needle in the wrong position. I also like the bright LED work light that won't burn out until long after I have. Other special tricks I've performed with this machine: you can add a double needle to do some cool hems or designs, and you can even order an attachment foot that transforms this machine into a serger (well, kinda.) The only issue I've had in the year I've owned it is the "automatic threader" which is a strange device that pulls the thread through the eye of the needle. It worked fine with the factory installed needle, but hasn't worked with any replacement needles I've used. I could care less though; how hard is it to push thread through a hole? I get that more experienced sewers might have other issues with this machine, but for someone who wants to hem some pants, repair clothes, sew the occasional costume, and experiment with basic clothing construction, you can't go wrong with this model.

"Wonderful Machine!" 2009-07-08
By M Geef (Bronx, NY)
I bought this machine a few months ago to replace the cheap sewing machine that I had been using since college. It's a pretty sturdy machine, has a good weight to it, and works like a dream! Since it's electronic, you can change stitches with the push of ONE button (instead of having to mess around with 3 or 4 knobs like my old one) and it's super quite. I make tote bags, so I usually sew through multiple layers of fabric, interfacing, and webbing; and this machine handles it beautifully! My only complaint is that when you remove the flat bed and try to use the long arm, there is a rod of plastic (seemingly useless) that gets in the way. So if you plan to sew a lot of pant lets ,or shirt cuffs, you might want to consider something with a better long arm.

First of all the auto tension is not auto it does need to be adjusted the button hole feature sews the button holes inconsistently keep an eye on tension through out project both bobbin and upper and find alternatives to button holes- i have - and you will be just fine

Avoid this machine at all costs. I purchased mine on Jan. 5 2009 and today all it will do is punch holes in the material. The machine is an import not made by singer and it shows having failed just over the 90 day return period. Singer should be ashamed of having sullied the name with this cheap import. Buy one if you must but you will save a lot of time if you just take the 200.00 and burn it.

"Sews like a champ!" 2009-03-04

I'm only giving this product 4 stars because the electronic numbers (for the stitches) went haywire rather quickly after I bought it (doesn't show correctly now, only pieces of numbers!), and it suddenly no longer makes buttonholes. Sigh. BUT-- other than that, this machine is REALLY great. I've sewn leather with it, and denim, and ballistic ripstop nylon webbing, and 4 layers of faux fur, and satin. It ALWAYS gets the job done, even if it sounds like it's straining sometimes. (Poor thing, i ask it to do things that I should be doing on an industrial machine, but it hasn't failed me yet!) I love that it has a threading diagram on it (for top thread AND bobbin), and it's really easy to work with. I'd highly recommend it!

"first new sewing machine, ever!" 2010-02-22
By V. Bowman (midwest)
This is the first new sewing machine I've ever bought and I love it. I've been sewing for 40years, quilting for 30 and never treated myself to a decent machine. When my second hand-me-down died I decided it was time. I love the nice bright light, the auto needle threader, and the drop in bobbin feature. The foot pedal took a little getting used to, as my old one was wider, but it works well.I've sewn several different kinds of fabrics both light and heavy and it handles them all great!

"Excellent Machine" 2010-01-31

I bought this for my wife for Christmas and she absolutely loves it. I got it when it was on sale for $100 less and I am glad I got it when I did. She is especially impressed with the stiching patterns that are available on this machine.

"First Impressions" 2009-12-06
By John A. Bates (Ferndale, MI)
After many decades of service, my wife's old Singer finally went kaput so we researched several different machines before deciding on this one. Not only did Amazon offer the best value, but my credit card had barely cooled when the machine and case arrived - super fast shipping. I know, I know - guys aren't supposed to give APPLIANCES as gifts but that's what she wanted and that's what she got.

Although this was a Christmas gift the wifey has been dieting and had quite a few outfits to alter before the holidays, so I encouraged her to open the boxes and get acquainted with her new machine. Right away, we were struck by just how much larger this machine was in person than when viewed on the web site. It's not really huge, just a bit bigger than we's envisioned. The machine works great, and she is still learning all the functions and features.

One curiousity - there was no instructional DVD with this particular machine, and nothing in the product description to indicate there would be one included, but it sure would be helpful - especially for a guy like me that is not very sewing machine savvy. Beyond the presser feet described on the web site, ours came with a whole 'nother bag of different presser feet - 4 or 5 others that we have not yet identified. Not sure if this was a packaging mistake or what, but it was a bonus. Singer *should* at least include a descriptive sheet of the different presser feet along with the intended use for each one so we'd know exactly what we're working with here. My bride is no stranger to Singer products, but this has even her a bit baffled. There's a double fistful of presser feet and are left to discover their useful functions on our own. This is the only reason I only rated this product at four stars instead of five.

Overall, first impressions are very favorable and we are both pleased with the purchase. Whether you are new to sewing or a wily veteran seamstress I think you could do quite well with this middle of the line machine. Buy with confidence, but do your homework first.

We purchased this machine for our 86 year old quilting mother. She loves it and can work more independently. This is a dream for her. We combined this with other vision aids and it seems to be working like a charm.

"I like the Curvy" 2008-10-03
By William C. Ford (Phoenix, AZ USA)
I had seen a Curvy at a store and thought it was what I wanted, so I checked on line and found a fair price so I ordered it. I received it at the time specified, and have now tried it out and like it very much. There have been no problems with it, it is light enough to carry around, compared to my old machine that I needed help carrying, and it works better than my Singer Athena ever did. The auto threader works fine, and the bobbin rewinder took two tries to figure out, but it is great. The DVD sent as instructions was a little lacking in detail, but I am happy with my new machine.

"I dont recommend" 2010-04-15
By SikWitIttEve (Hawt, AZ USA)
Bought it thinking it would be a great space saver and since i don't really need to sew things that often. I read the instructions twice before actually trying it. I did the whole 'Operate machine for 10 seconds then pause for 5 seconds'. Still didn't work. It jammed in every time. Would be a great machine if it actually worked like it's suppose too. Honestly, this product doesn't even deserve one star.. Props to the people who got it working.

"GARBAGE!" 2010-04-13

If I could give this zero stars, I would. Returned this--it NEVER worked. You are better off buying a basic sewing machine.

"Can I give it 0 stars?" 2010-02-18
By Kinickie (USA)
Those who complain about poor hems and the slowness are lucky. I purchased one of these brand new and it wouldn't even turn on. I will be returning this and going with another product. It's a shame Singer put their name on this piece of junk since they usually have great quality products.

"SewSlow" 2010-02-17

I have so far try to mend the hem of three pants. It seems to average a missed stitch for about every inch or two. This requires that one has to manually throw a knot there or else the entire sewing job will become unraveled. For one hem I gave up and did the whole thing manually. Although "ergonomic and lightweight" I found it hard to hold and feed the cloth at the same time. The box suggests that it is strong enough to go through leather which is a laugh, as it struggled to go through flannel. Either sew by hand or get a real sewing machine. I am surprised Singer gave its name to such a poor product. BTW, the needle was in the correct position so that is no excuse. I tried adjusting the tension which did not seem to matter.

Ugh. I bought this on a whim because I was looking for something just like this and it had the 'Singer' name. BAD IDEA. Should have read the reviews first. It won't even complete one stitch!! Are you kidding me? Groan. Total waste of time.
