"Shark" 2009-12-05
By Patricia Gharrity
I've had this machine for about 4 years. My husband bought it for me so I could learn how to sew and quilt. It is so easy to use, I've learned so much with this machine. I have not had a problem with it in the four years I've had it.

"great up until now" 2009-10-20
By sbf
This machine served me well for about six months, but recently the top thread has been getting stuck in the bottom bobbin, jamming the whole machine. Upon doing some internet research, I discovered that this is a common problem with this model, but I was unable to find a solution. Like I said, I had no problems up until this point, and really liked the machine, but now I'll most likely be stuck paying an exorbitant fee to get it fixed.

"Wow, Shark has a lot of buttons" 2007-12-06
By SmartguyH
Okay, I just got back from the store and I am reviewing this machine vs. another one. This machine, the shark has all of the stitch designs that I'm looking for. You can't tell from the picture b/c it doesn't zoom close in enough, but it has lots. Some even look like the patterns you see on clothes in the store. Taht's a plus. It also gives great descriptions of what's inside. (Like # of bobbins, needle case with needles, foot, etc) It also gave button hole pictures so you get an idea of what it can do.I'm a novice to sewing with this machine. My first one was a VX1005, it lasted about 10 years. It still may even work and I just hit the wrong tension dial or soemthing. (if anyone knows let me know. I can't get even stitches or the same stitches at that. And the zigzag doesn't work well or at all really.) It also says it does embroidery and it has a quilt table.Anyway my concerns about this machine was that: 1.) it was a Shark. I'd never heard of Shark and I saw soooo many singer products around (needles thread, bobbins, etc) and 2.) no Shark accessories. So if my needles break or if i loose a bobbin, could they be replaced? I've used a universal needle but, I'm not sure if that's a solution or a problem. 3) if something happens like it doesn' work or anything, then where can i take it to get it fixed? JoAnns does Singer machines and they said there are a lot of singer places where i can get my machine fixed. So, I'm still debating on if i get this or not. It definitely has a lot of cool stitches and pattern designs...

"Good Sturdy Machine" 2006-12-07
By N. Bruske (USA)
I have not had a problem with this machine yet but I have only done one project with it. The instructions are fairly good and have pictures to try and explain the steps. It is nice that it comes with a case because that will run you $20. The auto-thread is nice but the instructions were hard for me to understand. I found a website that had better instructions and I got it right away. I would recommend this to someone.

"I like it" 2006-11-30
By E. Varad (Chicago, IL United States)
I am new to sewing and had this machine for a week now. I like the heaviness, the all metal construction that feels sturdy and durable. As with everything read your manual! I had some trouble sewing a buttonhole at first but a bit of common sense helped and my third try was perfect and the machine did it all by itself. The tension on the machine came perfectly set and I had no trouble with it. Threading was easy after the first few tries and I find I actually prefer the normal manual threading rather than the automatic threading. After doing some research I realized that many machines, even more expensive ones, do not offer adjustable presser foot pressure; it usually says it's pre-set. On this machine you can adjust the foot pressure, although that too came perfectly adjusted.I wish there was a way to sew at different speeds more easily. I am still too new to have a good feel for controlling the speed and I either go too slowly or too fast, but I guess this is a function of experience. All in all, I like this machine a lot and don't regret buying it.

Serger in good condition. Works great. Great price. Thank you. I have a very successful in home sewing busines. I was apprehensive about the purchase, but I'd read that Janome makes good machines. I am happy that it works so well, although it is not as "user friendly" as my Pfaff Hobbylock.

"Awful machine!" 2010-06-20
By ekory
I bought this machine in January at a B&M store. I didn't do any research because I just wanted a basic machine and had read good reviews for Brother machines. This weekend I finally needed to use it to recover 5 cushions. What should have taken a couple of hours used up a whole weekend causing headaches and much cursing. I had to finish the project so I continued to deal with the bobbin clogging up, thread tangling in the upper mechanism, huge knots on the bottom of my fabric. I finished this morning hand sewing the final two seams. It's too late to take it back; I've learned a lesson here. It's going in the trash with less than 20 hours on it. My hb said to sell it or give it away, how could I do that knowing what a piece of trash it is?

"The machine couldn't even sew a simple straight seam!" 2010-06-08
By Just Another Linguist (Indianapolis, Indiana)
I just returned my Brother VX-1435 after two days of struggling, trying to get it to work. I've done plenty of sewing on other machines, but thought that since I don't use a lot of fancy features, I might as well get a basic machine. What a mistake! The machine wouldn't even sew a simple, straight-line stitch without skipping a stitch every so often - at least one every few inches, and at least once per seam it just quit sewing stitches at all and left you with two long strings of dangling thread. I tried everything to get it to pick up the bobbin thread - took out the bobbin case (an unnecessarily complicated setup, compared to any other machine I've used), re-threading the top thread, adjusting the tension (there's only one tension knob for both top and bottom) - I even took out the whole bobbin mechanism, following the steps in the manual, to check it. No luck at all.The instruction booklet says to call the company before taking the machine back to the store. I don't see the point, since they spent more time asking for phone, mailing address, e-mail, and fax (fax?) information than they did telling me to do what it said on the troubleshooting sheet. NO help at all, and the woman on the phone sounded like she'd never heard of this problem. I took it back to the store and spent the extra money to buy a machine from another manufacturer.

"Don't Do It" 2010-02-06
By cocopuff (east hampton, new york)
What a mistake it was to purchase this machine. Now that I look at the return instructions I see that I have to pay a 10% restocking fee as well as pay the UPS fee both ways (because it was "free delivery"). This machine is so primitive that I can't understand why they even bother manufacturing it.

"So far, so good." 2009-12-15
By Dee Marie (USA)
I am learning to sew again. This machine is very basic, but not more than I need right now. The instructions that came with the machine are easy to understand. It is very easy to set up and to use.

"I liked it until it broke after less than a year of light use" 2009-04-21
By Terra M. Nischik (Northville, MI)
I can't get the tension to work and I'm in the middle of sewing gifts for mother's day, great. I liked it ok but, now I'm irritated. Look for a better beginner machine unless the deal is SOOOOOO good you can't refuse it. I bought mine for $40 on sale. In retrospect, it was worth it but, now I need a new machine.

"Horrible" 2009-09-07
By B. McCaslin
Like in many of the other reviews i have had the same problems. Crooked stitching, broken thread every time i tried to correct the stitching, can not sew many types of thick or thin fabric, setting are very fast when plugged in and way to slow when operating on new batteries. Was using it to sew simple little dolls but it broke after maybe 5 uses and cannot get a replacement like promised with warrant when i purchased it.

"Not great, not bad- just not worth it." 2009-04-13
By Telichan
I definately thought this would be a great beginner sewing machine- and it is per say, but after using it for about two months, I broke the needle, had to replace it and found that it totally wasn't working anymore. It won't sew a thing now- and I'm really annoyed!! I bought this machine regardless of the fact that it had gotten some bad reviews, and now I totally regret it. I was using it to sew jersey material and such and it bunched up the fabric, came unthreaded constantly, and refused to sew more then two layers of any fabric whatsoever. I didn't expect it to be great, so I guess I can't complain too much- I just wish I could get my $30 bucks back. It's definately great if you're a beginner, and you're just hemming things, but there's no way it could seriously handle more than that. No way at all- trust the reviews, this many people can't be wrong.

"Great for the price" 2008-12-04
By Heather
I wasn't sure I would use a sewing machine, so I bought an inexpensive one as a "starter" and will upgrade when I gain a little more skill. But so far, it's been a great little machine. I was amazed at how many layers of cloth it can get through. I made a wall hanging in a snap. Someone with a lot of experience might not like it, but for a newbie, I've found it to be great.

"OK for limited use" 2008-08-02
By LFNYC (New York)
Like other reviewers said, its best use is for straight stitching and simple mending. This machine is NOT for beginners. If I had to learn how to sew on a machine like this, I would have given up the first day. In fact, if I had not had experience working in sewing factories and an understanding of basic mechanics, I probably would have immediately returned it, as several others said they did.A few of the problems with this machine? 1)It is unstable because of its light weight. I had my husband hold the machine in place while I sewed. 2)the feed-dog does not grip and push the fabric firmly enough. This makes stitching across flat felled seams, or going from one thickness to the other within the same seam (pleats, shirring, etc) impossible. 3)the tension (or lack there of) does not allow the thread to be pulled thru the tension lever. That is why, unless you slowly, manually pull the thread thru the guides, it will break when you finish the seam and want to remove the garment from under the presser-foot.Having said that, I don't have room for a real sewing machine at home, so I bought this for mending and simple tasks. Here in NYC, it costs $15.00 just to have a straight seam fixed, so after I figured the thing out and got it working, its paid for itself already. But to be clear, I could not imagine being able to make a garment with this machine.

"the dressmaker that couldn't" 2008-06-22
By S. Brosnan
i bought this machine because I am novice and have very limited storage space. For the first few garments I made, the machine was fine. I loved the size but then it all went badly. Thread breaking, the bobbin basically bounces out and binds the entire machine. If you are only using this to do the most basic mending...well, you are still better of doing them by hand. This would make a fine toy

"NOt userfriendly" 2009-08-06
By Eva L. Hallgren (FL)
If you don't sew too much it's a good little machine, but oh so frustrating to change the bobbin and every time you use the thread cutter the presser foot falls off. If I looked closer on this machine I would never have bought it, I would have made sure the bobbin loads from the top. If you want to put this machine in a sewing table, you have to crawl under the table to change bobbin. To thread a new bobbin you have to rethread...........summary. good for once in a while sewing and mending, priced good, but not user friendly.

"Lovely machine!" 2009-07-01
By hwest217 (VA)
This the first sewing machine I've personally owned. I grew up using my mom's Singer machine, so I knew I wanted to look at Singers before thinking about any other brands. I fell in love with the splash of red on this machine, and the fact that it includes all of the basic necessary features. Two pleasant surprises - 1. The thread cutter located to the left of the needle/presser foot. Definitely comes in handy! 2. The brush included in this set has a cap on one end covering a seam ripper. Very insightful.

I have had this machine for over four years. The stitching is beautiful and the embroidery features are a dream come true. I have not had one ounce of problems with this machine. It is so dependable I would recommend this machine to anyone considering on buying it. Go for it!! You won't be sorry!!

"I am totally thrilled with this product!" 2009-01-30
By James A. Kinman (Muskogee, OK)
I have been sewing for about 45 years (started young) and have been talking about getting an embroidery machine for about 5. I finally broke down and bought this one. I love it. It is an absolute necessity to have computer knowledge with this model as it interfaces with your computer. I would also recommend that your order a variety of threads and stabilizer to arrive about the same time. I hated waiting for my thread order, but had a lot of designs to do by the time it got here. This machine fits all my sewing needs with over 80 built in regular stitches and two hoop sizes for embroidery, plus the digitizing software. Awesome machine!

"Lots of fun" 2008-01-14
By lisamet (ALABAMA)
This is a great starter machine.. It will pretty much do anything you want...The sewing machine I can't tell you much about..I use it exclusively for the embroidery function. It only comes with the two fonts. If you are going to need script, you will have to find it and download it. It will take almost any format. I have been using it for nearly a year now and have had no problems..The instruction manual is awful It really doesn't tell you anything. You are left to your own devises as far as figuring out how to embroidery....Don't forget to drop the feed dogs when your in embroidery mode. A broken needle in that position can possibly make you have to have it serviced..timing jumps out...If you are just starting out be patient and just keep playing.

"Nice embroidery machine" 2006-10-26
By Memyself&I (Texas)
This is a fairly nice embroidery machine for the price. It does have a few things I don't like but overall I am glad that I purchased it.The embroidery designs sew out beautifully! And getting a machine that you can hook directly to your pc is definately the way to go! It elimanates pricy design disks and cards. You can find lots of great desings on the web to purchase and download to use on this machine plus it accepts many formats. What I don't like about the embroidery aspect is the fact that the large hoop is not a true 5X7.So I have to resize a lot of my designs to fit the hoop.I really wish they offered a larger hoop as an extra accessory! The digitizing software that comes with the 200 is not that spectacular. You can take simple clipart pictures and turn them into embroidery but nothing too complex and the software dosen't allow you to make appliques.I think you can get better digitizing software elsewhere. It also only comes with 2 fonts: courier and block. You can purchase a disk with extra fonts but the disks for this machine are expensive! I think they run around $200.The sewing part of this machine I rarely use mostly because I have a Euro Pro sewing machine that I sew on and comparing the 2 I am all for the Euro Pro hands down. This machine seams to sew a little "rough" in comparison.Overall I think this is a Great starter embroidery machine at a good price.

What is Refurbished?

When a product is refurbished, it is made to look like and operate as a brand new item should. Many times it is as simple as the box being opened by mistake or for quality checks. Once the box has been opened, that item cannot be sold as new. Items with serious malfunctions are not refurbished, it would cost too much to refurbish them to 'like new' condition. Each refurbished item we feature is completely inspected, rerun down the production line and triple checked for quality before being packed and shipped. Most of the time the only difference between new and refurbished is the brown box and the lower price, which is your gain as an educated consumer. We are so confident with the quality of our refurbished items that we offer a full 30 day return policy with every purchase, so buy with confidence!

"overlock" 2010-05-19
By H. Minasyan
Overall this is a great product from singer and it was delivered in a timely manner, but there are no supplies that usually come this kind of purchase. There is no tools to use for its maintanance and no spare anything at all. Where with the other purchase of the same product I recd some spare stuff for it.

"Terrific Price, Average Machine." 2009-10-31
By L. K. Spinnenweber (Glen Burnie, MD USA)
I purchased this serger from Walmart about a week ago. The low price is what lured me in, and I have not been terribly disappointed yet, considering what I paid for it. Sergers are fairly complex and take a lot more patience to operate than sewing machines. You can expect to put at least an hour or two into setting this machine up, and should plan on running a few scraps of fabric through it initially to adjust the tension dials, which can be a bit finicky and over-sensitive. The machine comes with a DVD that is INFINITELY more helpful than the manual, and with a lot of patience and several failed attempts, I was able to thread it correctly and produce a stitch. My only complaint is that the stitching can be inconsistent at times, no matter how much I fiddle with the tension dials, but I cannot say I expected a flawless machine at such a low price. This is a nice machine for those on a budget or who use their sergers lightly. I only use mine for finishing the edges of light-weight fabrics, and it suits my purposes quite well. A more expensive machine would probably function more consistently, true, but I'm thankful there's a serger out there that meets my more stringent budget!

"Too Frustrating!" 2009-06-03
By Sally (Virginia Beach,VA)
I just bought this - not from amazon but from Walmart. I have never used a serger, but I figured with a little bit of playing around I would get the hang of it. I have been sewing for years. Just trying to thread the thing is almost impossible! Then, every time I go to start sewing it jams and breaks the threads! I realize the tension is probably off, but after 20 minutes of trying to thread the thing, for only 5 seconds of sewing, I just can't do it again! I am returning this monster and I think I will try the Brother 1034D. Sounds much simpler and most everyone is happy with it!

"Great value" 2010-09-24
By Libby
I did my homework before purchasing this sewing machine. You really get good value for the price. So far I've been able to sew denim without any problems. This was my first machine and I was able to start sewing really quick. The machine is nice and quiet. I wish the instructions had included a dvd but you only get a booklet. I recommend this machine it does everything you expect.

"Sew with Janome" 2010-09-23

Per my wife, the machine is easy to use. She loves the ability to wind thread on another bobbin without taking the existing spool of thread off the machine. Good price for the value.

"Awesome Sewing Machine for the Money!" 2009-10-28
By The Bear (Groveland, CA USA)
I purchased this sewing machine as a gift for my grand-children. When it arrived, I checked it out to make sure it worked well and was a good machine for them. I read the manual to learn about its' features and made all the stitches on a scrap of material. The machine is quiet, runs smoothly and makes beautiful stitches, plus it is lightweight and easy to transport.I was so thrilled that I kept raving, to my husband, about what a great little machine it is. In fact, I liked it so much, I decided to keep it for myself and I had to order another one for my grandchildren. This machine is way better than many machines that cost much more. I already have a Bernina (expensive) and a Singer Featherweight but I fell in love with this sewing machine. I would recommend it to anyone and, in fact, I did. I told two my friends about it and they each bought one.

"The Very Best!" 2010-06-01
By Guy May (EVERGREEN, CO, US)
I bought this machine for my wife's birthday. She is a quilter and was thrilled with the quality of this product. She has had several higher end sewing machines over the years but tells me this far and away the best she has ever owned! She says the features are outstanding and ease of use amaze her each time she works on her quilts!!

"what an AWESOME Sewing Machine!" 2010-05-16
By Joy Quinn (Toronto, Ontario)
I am sooo glad I bought this machine.. it's really quite easy to use.. within 1/2 hour of unpacking it, I was sewing away! Easy to thread, easy to use, the knee lifter for the presser foot and the auto thread cut are great. Very easy to change the feet, even while you are 'mid stitch'. Everything you would ever need is included. The extension table is a great plus especially since I am a quilter. I previously owned a Janome and wanted to stick with them and this model was a great choice! I highly recommend this machine! The only complaint I would have is the absence of a hard carrying case, ()although it does come with a soft cover.

"Wish I had the receipt.." 2010-08-01
By Daphne L. Brune (Houston, TX)
Please please please do not waste your money on this thing. We purchased it on clearance, thinking it would be great for our 5 year old daughter to sew with while Mommy sews. Yeah, no. It is INCREDIBLY noisy, and doesn't work at all. I am very familiar with sewing machines and machinery in general and this piece of junk is worthless. If you can get it to make a stitch at all it doesn't hold after you take it off of the machine - it instantly falls out. Save your money and see if you can find a 2 stitch sewing machine at a yard sale or something for probably the same amount of money. I ended up just breaking out my old 2-stitch Singer for my daughter to sew on since my she was so disappointed that this piece of ^&%* didn't work.

"Does not work--AWFUL design" 2010-07-29
By Sharon E Hallberg
My grandniece wants to sew--bought this with her birthday money. The stiches do not hold--just unsecured loops through the fabric--unravelled instantly. Set-up, especially threading, is extrememly difficult. she even tried exchanging it for another thinking maybe she got a lemon--the 2nd was the same. She was sorely disappointed. And it was a big waste of everyone's time as we all struggled to try to make it work. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!

"Do not buy!" 2010-05-23
By blah (ga, usa)
As everyone else has said, this thing is horrible. My daughter was sooo excited about sewing, but it won't be happening on this thing. If I can't find a kid's machine that works, I'll just teach her on mine. I just get nervous about little fingers and fast moving needles.I had a kid's machine when I was little, but I don't remember the kind. It was red and yellow, I believe and had some 70's flowers. It was purchased in the late 80's at a thrift store, so no clue when it was made, does anyone know what this machine could be? It worked well.

"piece of JUNK!!!" 2010-03-25
By J. Kirby (Mountain States)
I, (the Mom) have been sewing for 20+ years and know the ins and outs of sewing machines very well. We've followed the instructions perfectly and this thing simply DOES NOT WORK! It has consumed a huge amount of time and producted an even larger amount of frustration! My 8-year-old would be far better off learning to sew on a basic, possibly used, introductory, REAL sewing machine-- which is preceisely what I intend to purchase after I throw this piece of junk away.

"JUNK" 2010-01-11
By A. Krupa
I agree 100% with the other reviews. This is a piece of junk and Singer needs to know this. Total waste of TIME and money. We are VERY DISAPPOINTED.

"Good quality machine" 2010-08-12
By R. M. Cook (Kansas)
Pros:

-2, 3, or 4 thread serging
-Color coded for looper threading. It took me about 10 minutes the first time I threaded it. I have threaded my machine several times in the last couple of months and I can now switch colors and rethread in less than 5 minutes.

-has differential adjustment

-has several stitch options

-works ok with cheap thread (better with the quality thread though)

Cons:
-The needles are held in place by hex head screws so you need an allen wrench. My daughter lost the one my accessory kit came with, and the manual does not state the size. Its 1/16" though.

-the accessory kit doesn't fit into the free arm space. I know that isn't really a feature, but I have a friend that has a drawer in her serger for storing accessories.

Overall, I would recommend this to my friends. If you have stubby fingers or poor eyesight go for a model that self threads. But for me this was a great purchase.

"Save your money" 2010-03-18
By Michael S. Schutz (Woodbury, MN)
We ordered this product and it arived very fast. Delivery service was very good. That is the only good news. This product is in a word "BAD." My wife, a very good seemstress, worked with it for two day and never did get the 4 tensions set to do a good job. We took it to a sewing center and they could not figure it out either. We ended up spending a bunch more money and bought a Baby Loc. No tension buttons at all!! You can sew any weight of fabric with any thread and the surged seem is purfect. Final word, Do NOT throw your money away. Buy QUALITY.

"Easy to start with" 2010-02-18
By Urd Megami (FL)
So far this has been fairly good to me. I was easy to use easy to set up. The only problem I've had so far is it was hard to find all the adjustments, and sometimes the stitching seems to be too wide or too long without an intuitive way to fix it. Other than that it makes quick work of seams and am waiting to wrestle with the other set ups such as the gathering stitch. The CD was very helpful to see exactly how to thread the machine. However after watching it once or twice the manual was the most helpful for reference.

"If I can do it, anyone can..." 2010-02-14
By R. Jones (Virginia)
I sew very little. I have been pretty much snowed in lately and thought I would give serging a try. My machine arrived in only 2 days and I began the daunting process of threading it. I noticed that it already had some thread in it and I immediately pulled it out. I was actually a wee bit annoyed that they had left it that way. Oh my gosh, did I feel ridiculous when I figured out my mistake! Soooooo, I threaded it manually using the written instructions. It took a little longer than an hour to do so and most of that was spent on the Blue needle. The others were relatively simple. If you are COMPLETELY in the dark about sergers, I think this is a GREAT machine to purchase. The color coding was a life saver and I was actually up and running in about 90 minutes or less. The DVD provides very useful information about tensions, etc and I was very proudly making new seams on everything in my house in no time. My only complaint was that out of the box, the machine had a heavy mildew odor. It lingered on the machine for a few weeks and I can still smell it although it is bearable now. Other than that, I would recommend it even to the fearful. Nice for the price!

"Super serger!!" 2010-01-10
By B. Heckman
I received this serger as a gift and love it. I have had a serger for about 20 years and love sewing with them. It was shipped very fast, arrived in great condition. It was packaged very well. I took it out of the box, set it up and started sewing with it. It does wonderful stitches, is easy to thread, adjustments are very easy to do. The instruction book is very helpful too. I would recommend this machine to anyone who loves to sew.

"not a heavy duty machine" 2009-11-02
By ahmediyah (usa all the way)
i am an seamstress, experienced in garment making and a variety of crafts. ive been sewing almost ten years. for most of that time i had an older, heavy duty kenmore that would sew a tree if i asked it to (mind you i never did).

what i like:

auto threader, decorative stitches, the led light,

what i dont like:

that said the 7462 is a very lightweight delicate machine. it does amazing decorative stitches with adjustable length and width, but it doesnt Like to do them. the machine whines, tensions have to be adjusted just so, threading has to be to a T, etc. that is a major discouragement b/c i originally bought it for those stitches.

also, ive already had to adjust the bobbin tension (even though it says you wont have to) and it sounds like it needs to be oiled after a week.

ive already sewed a couple of garments in the short time ive had it, besides numerous smaller projects. overall... i like what it can do, but wish it was better manufactured.

"It's okay" 2009-02-14
By athenalove46 (Alaska)
I purchased this sewing machine almost 2 years ago. At the time I could not find any helpful reviews online and so purchased it since I needed a new, good sewing machine. It has served it's purpose. It sews. But I have never had success with any of the decorative stitches. They don't come out the way they are supposed to and so I dont do them (which is bad because one of the features is all the stitches). It is loud and clunky. No amount of cleaning and oiling will change that. One annoying thing is if you do take your foot off the presser foot and want to continue sewing sometimes it won't allow you to continue so you have to press it again. Also sometimes I have major problems changing the stitch length/width. I'll have to slide it back and forth a few times before it registers and beeps.

"could be better...lots better" 2008-01-30
By Wifey (Maine)
After reading a lot of on line reviews, I got this machine in September 2007. Funny that at the time I could hardly find many negative reviews and the ones I did find were people who had a beef with Singer or a weird fluke that made their machine break. So I took the plunge. I'd had another Singer that lasted a good 10 years with sporadic use. I'm certainly no seamstress. This was more or less for easy projects and simple sewing. It was easy to get started on the machine. The buttons for the various stitches are great. The horizontal placement of the thread seemed like a great idea. The instruction book was clear. It is easy to perform maintenance on the machine as the screws are easily accessible. That's about where my joy ends and my complaints begin.

First, the lighting stinks. Second, it's LOUD. If you get to pumping away at a long line of stitching, it's like a jackhammer. Then there's the godforsaken foot pedal. Irritating? You bet! It seems to either go slow or super fast and is clunky and unnatural. I have to use a bare foot to be able to grasp it with my toes to massage it to go a decent speed without jerking into super speed. Trying to get it to maintain a comfortable speed is hard work. If you step on the pedal and remove your foot, and then try to step on it again again right away, the pedal fails to work at all if you haven't allowed the needle unit to stop. It can be super annoying.

The last complaint I will voice is the fact that I am having one heck of a time getting thread that agrees with the machine. Yes, I've cleaned the machine. Yes, I've oiled the machine. Yes, I've adjusted the tension up or down. Yes, I've changed needles...bought good thread...am using "Singer" products...sacrificed a goat and did a rain dance...but the thread is forever clumping around the top of the needle and snapping off. No matter what I do thus far, I can't seem to solve that problem.

All in all, I am frustrated with this machine. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. You know that saying "you get what you pay for"? Well, if only that were true in this case! I haven't even gotten what I paid for!

"disappointed customer" 2007-01-09
By E. Riollano (Buffalo, NY)
I Ordered singer sewing machine 7462 and recieved 7444. I contacted the retailer who informed me they did not have 7462 available and instead sent me the upgade. No matter how hard I tried, I could not see how 7444 was an upgrade to 7462.

"Breaks after a few months!" 2006-07-12
By
i've had this machine for about 7 months, and i've had tons of problems with birdnesting and the bobbin.the "auto-tension" feature is hardly automatic. the "auto" setting is only good for 2 layers of light- to moderate-weight fabrics. forget trying to sew boucle or more than 2 layers of denim with this machine. stick to broadcloth and thinner denims. of course, you can only sew these fabrics if the bobbin works.the bobbin cradle (where you lay the top-loading bobbin) broke yesterday afternoon, and now i've gotta buy a replacement. i was sewing two layers of boucle with mild thread, and the machine jammed. i thought, "well, that's normal for this machine," and went about un-jamming it. when i went back to sew, it did it again, something that hardly happens for another 10 minutes. after a disassembly of the bobbin area, i determined a piece on the bobbin cradle had broken off. "great," i thought, "now i need to buy a replacement cradle."this machine is not worth the money. if you want something that breaks, go with a lesser model and save some money. replacement parts aren't cheap on this, either, since it's a relatively new model. my '78 Singer tears through thicker fabrics with light and heavy threads like nobody's business, but this newer model breaks its own parts within 7 months of being set up. my advice: stay away from Model 7462.

"Reliable 4-Inch Cloth Cutting Machine" 2010-04-07
By Christopher Pearsall (Rhode Island)
Product works fairly well. I would recommend this product only when you are trying to cut multiple layers of fabric or similar textiles at one time. The less you try to cut the more bunching there is. Controlling the cloth for a straight cloth when there are only a few layers causes bunching and the cut is not straight the way you would like. I purchased this to help my wife so she would have less pain when cutting fabric for online sale due to severe carpal tunnel and hand pain. For the price she hasn't been able to use it much. It rolls over the surface and it does do the cutting but there is nothing to control the fabric being cut while you control the cutting machine. I think it should be emphasized more that this is a product more for cutting thick cloth projects. For thinner projects you can more easily control the fabric with a handheld rotary cutter and get a more accurate cut.

"Great machine" 2010-07-25
By Swede
Machine is very straight forward in its use. Simple to operate and very sturdy. Has a very large table add on which makes it great for quilting. Machine operates extremely well with the Grace stitch regulator when used in a frame. It is very fast and has a nice stitch. Has a built in cone thread holder which makes it nice for machine quilting.

"Closest thing to an industrial machine." 2010-02-04

I bought this machine a few years ago because I couldn't resist the idea of a faster home machine. I still have my Bernina, (25 years old) that sews beautifully, But I have to admit that I LOVE sewing on this machine. It is fast and the stitches are solid. It also has the same features that I love on my Bernina, which is the leg lift, and easy set up. The threading is smooth, and downright flawless. Honestly, the price is fantastic if you consider what you have to pay for an industrial machine, or even a brand new Bernina. I find that I can do 80% of my sewing using a single stitch. I have to switch back to my Bernina for button holes and maybe special darning projects (which I rarely use). I've worked on vinyl, polyester chiffon, denim and lots of cotton. Stitches are so clean, I would trust this machine for decorative top stitching. I didn't really "need" this additional machine, but now that I have it, I would never give it up.

"Juki TL-98Q" 2008-07-31

I really love this machine. I got it about three weeks ago and I was so pleasantly surprised by it's performance. Yes, it only does a straight stitch but it does a perfect, powerful, clean straight stitch unlike any machine I have used--- aside from an industrial Juki, which is just not practical in my apartment. I thought my old Singer was great (and it is, i must say) but this machine has not jammed once, it performs perfectly and I could not be happier with it!! I highly recommend this to anyone who sews a lot or who works in the fashion industry but just doesn't have room for an industrial at home!!!
