"baby quilt" 2010-06-22
By mydan (THIBODAUX, LA, US)
This was one of my first projects to sew on my new sewing machine. It sewed really well and enjoyed making my future grandsons quilt for my daughters baby shower and her first baby. The quilting foot that came with this machine really worked very well and I was very happy with the results. I had no puckers on the back side of the quilt like I had on my a previous quilt I made on my old sewing machine. I've yet to try a few of the other stitches but can say if it sews like what I have done so far I am very satisfied. I Have never had a machine that you can work everything with your hands instead of a foot control, this is a plus when you have had a knee replacement.

"Lifetime Machine" 2010-05-26
By Stacey M Smith (Fredericksburg, TEXAS)
I have found this machine to be both compact and well made. Mostly metal, there are a few plastic bits, but I don't think these would cause future problems. It's FAST- super fast. It zips through heavy weight fabrics with ease. I am pleased with the simple, but useful array of stitches (my other machines offer more stitches, but I rarely use them). This machine is stable and does not bounce (I have returned other machines that bounce when used). I think the light could be vastly improved -- it is way too dim. I prefer the LCD light on my other machines. All and all, I would buy this machine again and recommend to other crafters.
UPDATE: I have now been using this machine for several weeks. I'm very impressed-- the speed is fabulous-- note, this may be too fast for people new to sewing. Good thing Singer added a finger guard (which gets in the way a bit, but I'm sure I would have otherwise sewn through my fingers by now). Most recently, I have enjoyed how effortlessly it zipps through thick fabrics - amazing!

Wonderful machine. Powerful without 100's of fancy stitches which I never used on my previous machine (which lasted 30 years).

"nice machine" 2009-11-30
By L. halbritter
This is my second machine and I bought it because it seemed heavier duty than most in the price range. While the criticism about plastic parts is fair, the body is solid metal and heavy and the motor is extremely powerful. It's very easy to use, and the self adjusting tension is great, as I hate messing around with tension. the light could be brighter but overall I'm really happy with it. So far, all of the generic low shank feet I've bought have worked with it.

"Great Learner Machine" 2010-08-13
By msaggieamy (Dallas, TX USA)
The basic machine worked very well for me. I actually learned how to sew on the machine before this one (a used Singer Simple) until that one broke. (Motor busted: I sewed daily.) I replaced that Singer with this Esteem since it was basically the same model, and I wasn't ready to upgrade or spend a lot of money. This machine is easy to use and figure out. Between the not-so-great user manual & YouTube videos, I taught myself all the basics and some intermediate stuff on this machine. I have used it every other day almost for 4 months now and have not had the bobbin issues that others speak of. I will say that the size bobbins you are supposed to buy for this machine are slightly too big for the winder. (Had the same issue on the Simple, too.) I remedied that by sticking a very tiny hand-sewing needle between the winder and the bobbin. This created the tension needed to make the bobbin wind (vs. the bobbin saying still while the winder wound.) The other annoyance is that after cutting the thread, you will need to pull the thread out another inch or so before sewing again or it will come out of the needle. But really, for the price, these annoyances can be lived with for the beginner sewer or for someone who wants to just have a basic machine around for occasional projects.

"Never Could Get The Machine to Sew" 2010-05-12
By Peggy L. (Louisville KY)
I purchased this sewing machine a few weeks ago from Target. Watched the instructional cd on threading, bobbin winding, etc. Then read the manual that by the way was very annoying (it came in 3 languages: one page English, next page Spanish, next page another language. You could not read continuously without flipping thru several pages to get your next page). Then I started by winding the bobbin. Then threaded the upper machine (manually). Machine comes with an automatic threader but it did not work. I was never able to get the machine to sew. Thread kept jamming in the bobbin area. After 3 hours I gave up and took the machine back to Target.

"Bobbin thread will get ya!" 2010-05-05
By J. Keith
The first few projects went beautifully! Then....the fatal bobbin issue. The bobbin thread jammed, no biggie..right? Well, I have done everything I can think of...adjusting tension, resetting bobbin, oiled, changing out thread, changing needle...and this machine is screwed. I have owned it for a big WEEK! I understand this is a starter machine, but it should work without a hitch. It is very simple and to the point machine. This machine is very overpriced for its poor workmanship. I will be taking it back ASAP and replacing it with a Brother, which I should I have purchased a Brother in the first place! NO, I would not recommend this machine to anyone.

"Perfect Machine for New Learners" 2010-04-12
By imadeva
I adore my Esteem II. Got it as a Christmas present this year, and it has been great for making and tailoring costumes for my college's dance group. I'm relatively new to sewing, but this machine has been a breeze to learn on. It has a ton of stitches, as well as a button-hole-maker (can't figure out how to work it yet but it seems like an awesome tool!) It's easy to thread, clean, and transport - it even has a built-in cubby to hold stitch-ripper and bobbins, and comes with a few such supplies so you can get started right off the bat.
This machine will definitely be a money-saver (and a fun toy) for the bachelor/ette years ahead.
I'm in love... :)

"Great basic machine" 2010-02-26
By C. Henry
I'm very happy with my new Singer. I've been looking for a machine that will last me a long time, can do all the basic stuff, and isn't expensive. This machine is the one. I was considering buying a machine that also did embroidery, but I realized that I didn't really need that, and the warranty is longer on all manual machines. (25 years!) The machine has 25 stiches, half of which are stretch stiches, but I think that's enough for most projects. The automatic needle threader is a bit tricky, but it's not hard to do it yourself anyway, so I don't mind. I also appreciate that the machine has a light over the sewing area...a very nice added feature! If you are new to sewing, the machine comes with a dvd detailing how to thread the machine, which I think is the hardest part about machine sewing. If you do not thread the machine properly, you get bunched up extra thread. Once you have the machine threaded properly, it was very easy to sew! I recommend practicing with different stitches at first to see what the proper tension/length levels are for the different stitches.

Singer 14SH6540 Differential-Feed Serger Sewing Machine

Product By Singer(24 customers reviews)
Lowest Price : $220.39

Product Description

1) 3/4 thread machine [this means the stitches are made with 3 or 4 cones of thread]
2) Needles are Singer type #2022 [these are essentially sewing machine needles but a little heaver duty]

Equipped with a differential feed to permit the gathering of fabrics for creating ruffles, for example, and for sewing knits without them stretching, this two-needle machine sews six kinds of stitches with three or four threads and permits quick, easy stitching, trimming, and overcasting in a single operation. It provides convenience, speed (up to 1,300 stitches per minute), and the reliability of the Singer name. Available stitch functions include the three-thread overlock; the three-thread, wrapped-edge overlock; the four-thread mock-safety stitch; flatlock; blind hem; and rolled hem. Conversion from normal overedging to rolled hemming can be accomplished without changing the throat plate. Color-coded threading, adjustable stitch width (ranging from 3 to 6.7 mm), adjustable stitch length (from 2 to 4 mm), a stitch-length control dial, adjustable differential feed, presser-foot adjustment, and tension-adjustment dials for all four threads offer exceptional flexibility and control. Simply removing the cloth plate converts the machine for free-arm work. Singer's illustrated, step-by-step instruction booklet that accompanies the machine is invaluable. The machine comes with a 25-year warranty against defects on the sewing machine head; a five-year warranty on electrical and electronic components; and a one-year warranty against defects on parts and adjustments. --Fred Brack

"It should be recalled...." 2010-03-02
By Mary L. Austin
I purchased this model from Joanns 3 days ago. I have had years of experience with a 5-thread serger, so I know how a serger is supposed to work. The swatch of material under the needle showed a perfect 4-thread stitch when it was set up, (right out of the box)and I attempted to stitch on the same swatch of material. It was a mess. After investing about 18 hours in trying to get this machine to sew (I had resorted to trying only 2 threads utilizing the spreader)I contacted Singer and was given various "tips" to try as the tension would not hold for over 10 stitches, then would loop-de-loop for a few stitches, and go back to serging properly for only a few stitches. I was told it was a problem with the tension holding (yes, I knew that) and since it was under warranty I could take it to one of 2 dealers in the State, each dealer located approximately 2-1/2 hours away. It is easy to thread, yes, but the light is a big problem. It is an LED light and only if there is no other light source you can see to sew with it. Unless you sew in the dark, consider a different purchase. After reading the reviews (which I wish I had done before purchasing this serger) I ordered a Brother1034D from Amazon. I've used only Singer machines for the past 40 years, but after this experience I doubt I'll swear by the Singer Brand again.

"Disappointed..." 2010-01-31
By M. Lucas
Bought this at Walmart thinking that being a Singer it should be a decent machine. After a few days, thread got all tangled up inside which I can understand can happen. Problem is that the threading directions and pictures in the manual are so lame, and the color coding is a joke, so it was impossible to get it re-threaded. Funny thing is it says right on the box that it is color coded for foolproof threading! There is no color coding on the more detailed pathways the thread must take. I have been a dentist for 27 years and am used to detailed work (machine is for my daughter), but there is no way anyone can thread this machine using only the directions provided. The manual does not even show enough detail to see where the thread is going. I could not find any other directions online. Very disappointed in Singer's lack of regard for the consumer. Returned to Walmart and told manager to pull it from the shelves.

"Don't waste your time and money" 2009-07-23
By Beverly J. Reliford (Greensburg, Ky)
I purchased this machine thinking it would live up to the Singer Name, (even purchased a gathering foot, which by the way no attachements come with this machine,) boy was I wrong, the first time I used a different setting on the tension for gathering it never worked right again, no matter how it was set. I contacted support and they told me that it could be due to using different brands of thread, or setting the tension differently, anyway I got the run around. I have been a professional seamstress for over 30 years and know how to set tension and know about quality thread. They also told me to get it corrected I would have to send it to a repair shop, keep in mind that this machine was less than three weeks old! It worked a total of about one week. So I boxed it up and returned it to Wal-Mart and ordered a EZ Lock and it is working beautifully! and guess what, you can use different brands of thread.

"Singer Serger" 2009-04-01

I bought this Singer serger as a back up machine,it is good for what it can do, but you get what you pay for. I would recommend going up to the next model.

"Easy to use serger" 2009-03-31
By Susan B (Yorktown Heights, NY)
This is the first serger I have ever used. I was afraid to thread it but the accompanying dvd and written directions made it easy. I've swapped out the thread and the needles multiple times with very little effort except threading the needles due to space limitations for your hands, but there are tools for that which I am considering. Some of the manual is incorrect but it's easy enough to figure out what they are trying to say. It's a nice compact size so I can have it on the same table as my sewing machine and switch between them easily.

"Don't Do IT !" 2010-05-16
By L. Jenkins (Fort Atkinson, WI USA)
I was so excited to receive my "little sewing machine" until I started using it or should I say trying to use it. It was terrible. Very hard to thread and worst of all IT DIDN'T work. It ran for a few stiches and then would ball up on the underside of the fabric with a HUGE knot of thread. Save your money to protct your sanity. Aaaarrrgggg!!!

"Worst Product EVER!" 2009-11-16
By B. Lopez
I bought this little machine to do some hems, but never managed to get it to hold. This is the BIGGEST waste of money. Keep your $12 and invest it in something a little better. I recently purchased the Singer Pixie Craft machine which also allows for doing hems due to it's work arm. It's great! $40.00 at Walmart and the best part it actually gets the job done.

"Not worth the money" 2009-10-24
By shawna sanders
I would not recommend purchasing the Handy Stitch. It is not that easy to use. The thread falls out of the needle very easily. It tells you to tighten the thread however that does not help. Not a good purchase!!!

"confusing instructions" 2009-09-17
By A. Aguilar (USA)
I actually do not know how well this gadget works since I have not been able to use it. I am not saying it is a bad product, but if you don't know anything about sewing this is not for you. The instructions that come with it have non-specific diagrams which makes it almost impossible to even get familiar with which part is what. it should come with better instructions.

This product was shipped as if it was in working condition but we could not make it working. dont buy this product instead spend some more money to buy other brands at least they work.

"makes quilting easier" 2010-08-03
By V. Kruggel (Pensacola, FL)
I was doubtful that this would actually make quilting over multiple layers of fabric and batting easy, but it did. I'm glad I spent the money on the Brother Walking Foot (instead of the generic that may or may not have fit my machine properly). I didn't use the included screw for the arm to attach to because it didn't hold the sewing needle well. The screw that is already on the sewing machine works just fine. I recommend this product.

"A quilters must" 2010-06-08
By Lisa Hicks (Tucson, AZ USA)
I've been quilting for some time now, but without a walking foot... big mistake! The walking foot is a must for quilters because it pulls fabric from both top and bottom, preventing the fabric from shifting or bunching. This was especially helpful with the binding.

"a MUST HAVE" 2010-04-11
By Annie
For anyone who owns a sewing machine, I would say this foot is a MUST HAVE. There are times when nothing else will substitute. I am a seamstress and own 6 sewing machines. Two I have lent to daughters, so I have three I use alternatively, depending on my project, plus we have a heavy-duty machine. Recently, my husband purchased a Brother. I was surprised and asked him why he did that since we already have four other machines. He is a boat-builder and wanted to try his hand at sewing the sail for it. He purchased the Dacron sail-cloth. It is such a heavy-weight processed cloth that pinning it is next to impossible. He discovered a specialized double-stick tape that works, but it is so slippery, the poor little Brother machine was not able to handle this alone, so I purchased this walking foot. It has made all the difference. I have a picture of him on the floor, sail cloth surrounding him, taking up most of our front room, foot pedal in one hand, along with the cloth, the other hand behind the machine, feeding the cloth through as he sews this difficult piece. I am so proud of him for his efforts and excellent work. He truly feels he couldn't have done what he did without that walking foot. To my husband I say: Well done, Friend.

"Great machine for the price." 2010-03-21
By Ritayana (Lincoln, NE)
I didn't want to spend too much on an embroidery machine before knowing if it would be something that would get a lot of use. Although I don't have a dedicated sewing room I opted against getting a combo embroidery/sewing machine because I already had a regular machine. I spent almost a year researching machines and the major selling point besides price was that it takes a thumb drive. It was really easy to get started without having to study the manual too extensively. I hate anything with a steep learning curve because I have very little time to sew. I don't want to spend my precious time reading the manual. I had been looking at Babylocks, but regardless of what the Babylock sales person said, the Brother machines appear identical and much less expensive. I don't have time to take classes (an advantage of buying from a dealer) so I went for the cheaper Brother. Also, Babylock doesn't sell this model as a stand alone embroidery machine. The PE770 is the same as the BL Ellure Plus without the sewing machine. The set up is really easy and I immediately began stitching out some of the preloaded designs. The stitch quality is great. The preloaded designs are dominated by the "cutsie" stuff that isn't really my cup of tea. Who wants a garment with a teddy bear playing accordion on a tree stump? I downloaded some cool designs from a website and put them on the thumb drive. It was very easy to transfer them to the machine and sew them even though we don't own a PC. My husband found a program for Macs so I was able to see the image and the color chart on the Mac. We can run PC programs on one of our Macs and I will probably get Embird soon. Given the fact that it is a lower-end model there are some downsides. The image is in black & white on the machine's display. Also, the image just looks like a blob. There is very little editing on the machine itself. I am interested to know if the embroidery software will make that less of a problem. I haven't ventured into trying to place designs in an exact spot yet. The embroidery hoop comes with a grid to help with that but I haven't figured out how to do it. Once the thread broke and it was really easy to figure out how to get back to where it was and restitch it. If I end up using it a lot I might eventually consider a fancier machine but I think I made a good choice for a beginner. The automatic threader is great! The seller (Ken's via Amazon) sent some information about different types of stabilizer that was very helpful. I just wish I had more time to play with this fun machine.

"Brother PE-770 Embroidery Machine - LOVE IT !!!" 2009-11-09
By P. Hayman
I love this machine!! It was incredibly easy to set up and performed just like the instruction booklet said it would. The designs look great. It's easy to increase and decrease size and change threads, etc. I've never used an embroidery machine, but this is fun! It's easy to download designs from the internet and try them on the machine. The only problem I've had was the skipping of some stiches on the patterns, but I believe this is due to the poor material I was using for practice. My only complaint is I wish I'd known how much I'd love this as I would have bought a bigger one!

"Still on the bubble" 2010-07-21
By C. E. Scott
I've had this machine for a week now, and am still trying to decide whether to return it. I got it set up and working quite easily, including the tension adjustment that bothers some people. I've got two problems:
1) If I try to begin sewing near the edge of the fabric, or begin further in and backstitch to the edge, it sucks the fabric down and chews it up. I'm doing piecework so I need to be able to sew to the edge!
2) Posted a question to Singer's website about instructions for the quilting attachments; no response in a week. Doesn't give me confidence in their customer service. (Edited to add-- Singer responded to my question soon after I posted this, after more than a week. So either customer service is slow, or Amazon reviews are a better way to contact them!)

"Beginner's Best Friend!" 2010-02-01

I had no practical experience with a sewing machine and though I was eager to try my hand at it, it always intimidated me. This was my first machine, bought for me by my sweet husband. It is truly very easy but, at the same time, it comes with some really cool accessories that would cost a lot if bought separately! I wish it came with better explanations of all the additional feet but at this price it's still very impressive, especially for beginners.

"Singer confidence quilter" 2010-01-09

I have had this machine for a year. Most of the sewing I have done on this machine is quilt piecing, general sewing, and some quilting. One feature that no one has mentioned (as far as I recall) is a special feature that in piecing quilts has saved me much time in piecing. As you begin your seam the machine sews a few stitches and backs up over them, securing the beginning of the seam. When you finish the seam, hit the reverse arrow and it secures the last stitches of the seam in the same way. The stitches are consistently straight. It also comes with an attachable walking foot. The throat plate of the machine is clear making it visible to see if you are running out of thread. There are better sewing machines of this type but the price ranges begin somewhere at $1,000. With all the "bells and whistles" this machine has, I would highly recommend it.
