"First time sewing machine user's First impression on this package." 2010-03-23
By Bo H. Lee (LA, CA USA)
I have never used a sewing machine before, but i liked the idea that I can do alterations on my jeans and pants, do some patchwork on my old clothes, and do various jobs here and there. So I bought this. I was debating between this package and the machine only unit, and decided to go for the package because it has the same sewing machine, plus sewing kit that is supposed to have everything that fits to this small machine, and a pair of electrical scissors! I did calculations and the package would work much better if the scissors are worth buying. I gave it a try.
1. Sewing machine.
As a person who has never used a sewing machine, the machine looked little bit complicated (mind you that I am a software Engineer, and not afraid of using a machine for the first time) with lots of holes for threads. But the guide coming with the machine explains pretty much everything to get started with. I could get around with the guide. The problem was, though, the guide is in crude black and white print and it is hard to recognize the tiny holes in the pictures. And there's one picture while there are more than three ways to get the thread hooked up. If each way has an accompanying picture in colors, it would have been very helpful. It also comes with a small packet that contains a few thread rolls and needles.
2. Sewing kit
I haven't opened it yet, but the kit seems to contain the essential elements.
3. Electrical Scissors

So, here's my problem. I expected a lot about these scissors, because I thought the electrical scissors are a bit luxurious item. But they didn't work when I put two AA batteries into the slot. I tried a few different brands of batteries but they didn't work. It made the motor sound in the very beginning at first but that was it. There is no guideline so I don't even know how it is supposed to work. I am thinking about getting them replaced by calling the sewing machine company. I will update this review once I figure these scissors out. But I love this little sewing machine; and thinking I would have fun and save money as well!

"BROTHER WALKING FOOT" 2010-04-07
By CHICAGO QUILTS (chicago, il)
A walking foot for your sewing machine is an important accessory. The brother walking foot works great. Uses are for quilting and sewing bulky items together. Make sure you buy the correct brand for your machine. I would not try to switch from brother to singer. This is a reasonable price. When you buy them separate from machine they cost more. If you get them in a bundle, jump on it.

"Super Smooth Machine" 2010-06-27

We do alot of sewing on tackle twill for uniforms. This machine is super easy to use.Although I originally thought it was a metal machine.Stupid me it was plastic that looked like metal.Pretty great machine for the money.

"Awesome Machine" 2010-06-05
By E. Docton
I am a professional seamstress and I own 2 real industrial sewing machines plus several home machines. I've always been curious to see this one working and I have to say, this is a GREAT machine, it DOES sew almost as fast as the real industrial machines. Here are some points of interest from this machine:

- The set-up could not be simpler, it has a very standard, easy to understand threading system.

- The stitches are nice and straight, all seams are beautiful. If the machine starts skipping stitches, check the thread and the needle, I found the few times I had this issue, I was using the wrong sized needle for the project.

- The Button Hole maker is very mechanical, you have complete control over the seams and when to stop. If you are used to the "one button" feature on other machines, this might take some time to get used to.

- This machine is POTENT, you need a super sturdy, super strong sewing table to use this machine to it's full potential, otherwise you will end up shaking your entire area.

- Use GOOD quality thread, I found that the lower quality thread don't hold up to the power and speed to this machine, they break easily with this machine.

Things I wish it had {but are not necessary}

- Thread cutter on the side of the machine as most of the new machines.

- Automatic needle lowering which is great for not loosing your place in between seams.

- Different size button hole stitches. This machine only offers one size of stitch that's pre-determined. You can make the holes as long as you want them, but the actual stitches come only in one size.

Overall, if you are going to spend 200-300 on a machine, why not a machine that is strong and will last you forever with minor maintenance?

"IT WORKS BUT" 2010-04-11
By Jody L. Griffin (BIG CREEK, KY)
I got this for my Mother who is a seamstress, she said it works fine, but it's not as heavy duty as they act like. It's just a standard machine.

"Singer HD110 - Super Machine!" 2010-02-24
By M. J. Cooper (Billerica, MA USA)
It's an absolutely great machine. A little picky about how the bobbin is wound but other than that I couldn't be happier with it. It's ease in working with it surpasses even the other Singer machine that I have (don't remember which model it is right this minute) but I'll tell you that I prefer to work on this machine. Putting in the needle is a little tricky too, but the fact that it has a needle threader too is totally awesome. I'm getting to the point where I have some difficulty threading a needle (without squinting a lot) and this little gem is just what I needed. I would recommend this product to anyone who enjoys sewing and mending. It's the greatest!

"Singer is not the company it used to be." 2010-02-19
By Elizabeth Jamieson (Los Angeles, CA United States)
I love my new Singer HD, I bought it for making a canvas tent. It's quiet and sews through thick fabric beautifully. However, I am shocked that Singer, the brand my mother swore by, put a cheap plastic needle holder and cheap plastic bobbin holder in a HEAVY DUTY machine. I've already had to replace these two parts because they broke. On the needle holder, I was just changing out a needle and the screw shaft came out in my fingers as I was loosening the screw. This rendered my machine useless until I could buy a replacement part. We sewers know how frustrating it can be to be without a sewing machine when working with a deadline.

"Great for Beginners!" 2010-05-04
By Dan & Sarah (Philly Burbs)
My husband bought me this machine for an early Mother's Day gift. I am really new to sewing and so far am in love with my Janome!! It was so easy to learn to wind the bobbin and thread the machine, going by just the manual. I haven't sewn a thing since 8th grade home ec and after 2 days of practicing I've already hemmed some things and fixed a few seams in my husbands' boxer shorts ;) The machine itself is very solidly built and runs so smoothly, it makes me feel silly for being so nervous about sewing for so long. I wish I had gotten one years ago! I would definitely recommend this machine to anyone looking to get into sewing for the first time, or anyone who just wants a good, solid-running machine that will last for many years. I've always heard good things about Janome and this machine is no exception.

"Some trade-offs, but a great sewing machine overall" 2010-05-30
By Joanna Daneman (Middletown, DE USA)
I really like Janome sewing machines; they are rugged, feature-rich and really excellent for the home sewist. While there are fully-featured models from competing manufacturers that cost half as much, the Janome deliver trouble-free features such as clog-free bobbins and a number of innovations that make sewing a pleasure, for example, a very good feed dog system with seven parts that delivers smooth operation. The tension is very well made; I had few issues adjusting upper tension and the lower tension seems to react incredibly well--I was trying to abut two adjoining pieces of fabric with a loose fringe-like ladder by loosening the upper tension to almost nil. However, the lower tension adjusted and made a smooth satin-like stitch which actually was not the effect I wanted (I wanted messy loops) but shows that the technology of the Janome bobbin tension is quite remarkable. Not surprising as Janome's fame is their bobbins, and in fact, the name means "Eye of the Dragon" or "Eye of the Snake" and refers to the round bobbin that they invented. However, the way the machines are marketed makes me delete a star; to get a model with the right "bells and whistles" plus some features I consider "musts" is not easy and you end up having to move up to the most expensive machine in the series in order to get the most versatile model. And the models are revised constantly; wait a year and a whole set is discontinued and a new set with an equally perplexing matrix of features will be introduced. And then there are "commemorative" models that come and go quickly. It's confusing. The DC2010 is a case in point. If you drop down to the "Magnolia" line, which is a line of starter machines (by the way, suitable for any young sewist to start out on) then you give up a lot of the heirloom stitches that make sewing garments and decorative home linens worth your time. But the Magnolia top-of-the-line 7330 has the option of foot-free start-stop, meaning you can sew and coordinate free quilting without having to press a foot pedal up and down to regulate speed and start-stop. (This is something akin to rubbing your tummy and patting your head. You can do it, but it takes a bit of concentration.) The DC2010 lacks two other features that make it less than optimal. Firstly, there is no adjustable pressure for the foot. This is a dial on top that makes the presser foot squeeze the fabric onto the feed dogs with more or less pressure and allows you to adapt the pressure for the fabric you are working on (sheer to heavy.) The "Threadbanger" TB-30 has this feature (at a similar price point to the DC2010) and start-start stop as well. You just give up 20 additional heirloom stitches to get this. (So, if you don't like machine ornamental stitches, go look at that model before it's discontinued.)Secondly, there are only three choices of buttonholes, done in satin stitch. The knit buttonhole and "hand-stitched" buttonhole are missing. Strange, considering this machine has 50 stitches including heirlooms like feather and ladder stitch. In order to get adjustable pressure and more buttonholes, there is a more expensive machine (DC2160) or you go with the Threadbanger TB-30 and leave off doing darning or heirloom stitching, because the TB-30 has 30 stitches NOT including darning nor many heirloom hem stitches. (You can of course darn by dropping the feed dog and moving the fabric freely with an optional darning foot.) However, if you aren't as fussy about buttonholes, don't care about adjustable pressure and if you like heirloom stitching and can live with foot-pedal operation only, the DC2010 is machine that delivers a lot for a very reasonable price. My feeling is that if you can find about fifty percent more to spend, it's worth it to move up to a better machine but if your budget is around four hundred, this is a fantastic home machine and only the foot-free and pressure versus stitch choice would have you choose between the Threadbanger or Decor. You can spend a lot less on some very widely available mass-marketed machines, but reports of tension problems and overheating during long sewing sessions are common complaints, and if you are serious, you don't need such frustration.More quibbles; the lower end machines have an accessory box that pulls off the free arm end and is simply two connected tubes in which you store the feet and other accessories. The better machines have the drawer type of accessory box that pulls down in front. I hate pulling off the box just to find a foot. And may I also say that a zipper foot, buttonhole foot, satin stitch foot and regular foot are not a generous number of presser feet. Again, the higher end machines have blind hem and overedge as well. These feet can add up quite a bit when you are outfitting your machine to suit your projects. I like to have a good open toe foot, a darning foot (like a mini embroidery hoop), a button foot (padded open toe that holds a button better than the satin foot) and a walking foot and the blind-hem ditch-stitching foot. Even at discounted prices, this adds up quickly.Despite these quibbles, I'd recommend this sturdy machine for anyone on a reasonably tight budget who wants a durable, decent machine that makes pretty stitches and can do a lot. For heirloom sewing and quilting, this is a wonderful machine. If you are sewing on a large variety of fabrics that require adjustable pressure, you might try a different model.

"Sewing Machine" 2010-04-19

This product arrived quickly and in perfect condition, I just plugged it in and started making quilts! It is a wonderful sewing machine, well worth the money. I would definitely use this supplier again in future for other sewing needs.

"Defective Product" 2010-04-17
By Goofy Redneck (Jackson, SC USA)
Product was defective. Had to return. Wanted a replacement, but they would not replace it. They gave a refund instead.

"Exactly what I needed" 2010-03-15
By W. Wenck (virginia)
I am an intermediate sewer and bought this machine on the advice of my aunt, who is a professional seamstress who uses the same machine. The machine is easy to thread. The bobbin, also easy to load, is in a clear encasing so you know when you're running low on bobbin thread. The special stitches look great, are easy to use, and provide excellent support to my crafting projects. (They do use a lot of thread, though.) The feed system is so smooth, much better than my old Singer. Feels like I've upgraded my ride from an old beater truck to a luxury sedan! The manual is a little tough to use if you don't have much sewing knowledge, but that's my only complaint. Wish I'd bought this machine years ago!

"Not bad" 2010-05-30
By Hotside
I didn't want an expensive sewing machine. I just wanted to hem my boy's pants which are always too long, and it works for that. The instructions are pretty bad but with a little help from Youtube I figured it out. I was able to rethread the bobbins and use the thread I had without any problem. I think if I, who has never used a sewing machine in his life can figure it out, just about anybody can.

"So sad" 2010-03-27
By Cas (AZ)
I was sad that only way the machine work was with the bobbins and thread that came with it. I even empty one of the bobbins to use with new thread and did not work right. The machine works with thin fabric it does not work with heavy fabric very will.

"Roll-hem presser foot" 2010-07-03
By C Burgess
Works great with my Babylock DenimPro (circa 1994?), on several fabrics (even flannel) and using zig-zag. Didn't work on straight stitch since I can't position the needle on my machine to far left or far right, center only, which causes the stitch to miss the roll entirely -- but that's a problem with my machine, not the foot.Delivery was lightning fast, and the product was exactly as advertised. Thanks!

"Great Foot - Makes Great Hems and Great Price" 2010-05-22
By K. Brown
I bought this distinctive hem foot after purchasing their 1/4" foot. It is a great fit for my machine and is just what I was looking for. I wanted to make small precise hems and this foot delivers. Works amazing with my lightweight fabrics on a short straight stitch. Great buy too, couldn't find it anywhere else that could even come close to the price.

"too small to be practical!" 2010-05-19
By K. Chmiel (philadelphia, pa)
I bought this (and the brother narrow hem foot which is the same thing so stay away from that too imo)and tried to use it on anything. It will only work on lightweight fabrics and even then the stitching is hard to look uniform. The stitches look wonky and the hem is incredibly small (5mm or less). I decided to just go for it and get the "distinctive" rolled hem foot set which has seven different and USEFUL sized hems (like 1/4" and 5/8", etc.)and give you a chance to keep those hems clean and professional looking. It is $50 for the set, but i am so much happier to have hemming feet that actually work!

"A great fit for my Brother sewing machine!" 2010-03-25

Yay! These are a little hard to find retail. It fits and works great on my Brother SR-65 machine. Plus, it was delivered with AMAZING speed!! I had a project waiting on the delivery and it was even faster than I would have dared hope!

"Good case for Singer 7470 Sewing Machine" 2010-02-09
By T. Mok (NJ, United States)
I bought this for my Singer 7470 sewing machine. It fits, with room to spare. This particular model of sewing machine has a heavy base, so normally, the machine wouldn't move around inside the case. I use mine as a storage case, rather than a transport case. So, I don't travel with it that much. For me, this case is good.Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the seller was Target, which charged for tax and shipping. I could have picked this up from my local Target, and saved on shipping. Oh well. Live and learn.

"Universal carrying case - too big" 2010-02-08
By M. Mitchell (So. Cal.)
Very cheap looking. The sewing machine fits inside but the case is too big so must stuff rags to keep machine from moving around. I liked the "old fashioned" case that fit the sewing machine perfectly. Could not return the case since shipping was too expensive. Had I purchased @ Target (rather than thru Amazon), I could have returned it.

"hard carrying case not necessary" 2010-01-30
By Winston's Person
We got this carrying case to go with the sewing machine we got for our daughter for Christmas. What we didn't realize when we ordered it was that the sewing machine came with it's own soft-sided cover. The soft-sided cover has a hole in it so that you can still use the handle on the top of the machine to easily transport it. We decided not to give the hard carrying case to her because it would just be added bulk for her to deal with. Had to pay return shipping fees which would have equaled the price of the case so we decided to keep it. Will likely donate it somewhere.

"STAY AWAY FROM THIS MACHINE" 2010-04-12
By Michele (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
I have used this machine twice and the "lower pressure foot" keeps coming up in the window and the pressure foot is down. BROTHER'S ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM? Get it serviced. Stay away from anything with the Brothers name on it!

"I have loved this machine!" 2009-11-30
By P. Osborne (central florida)
I purchased this machine 3 1/2 years ago. I have never had a problem with it, and I use it at least weekly. My daughter was expecting our 1st grandchild when I got it, and now we are expecting our 3rd and 4th. Needless to say I have been sewing baby clothes and embroidering onesies, bibs, blankets, etc. like a fiend. I like the cassettes, and pre-load them with the different threads for embroidery. I purchased 3 extra when I bought the machine. To me, this has been the most funI have ever had sewing, and it inspires me all the time to do more!

"Gotta Get One" 2009-11-15
By Judith M. Greer (Sunny Sebastian Florida)
I purchased my embroidery (Brother SE-270D) machine on the 12th of December in 2004 and gave gifts for Christmas made with it that year. I took it out of the box and began to sew. The instructions were clear and easy to understand and with supervision my kids have learned to use it too. I have many disks of designs that I use with a blank memory card through a gadget called an amazing box. I have also purchased cards from brother. I have worn out my medium hoop but happily admit about 1,000 successful uses before it wore out

"Brother se-270D awesome" 2009-03-05
By V. Davis
I purchased the Brother SE-270D as a replacement sewing machine (I had worn out my other one). I wanted to start embroidering and mongraming, but sewing was my main function. I have LOVED playig with this. The only negative I would say is the auto threader, but if you buy the smaller spools it works fine. Mine is missing something that is supposed to allow you to use larger spools, so I have to improvise and it is a REAL PAIN. For a novice embroiderer I would say it is a good starter machine. The hoop size is only 4X4 which can be prohibitive, but for my use it is fine.Since I use it a LOT for clothing, I love the buttonholer and button features and the auto cutter is convenient. If you are mainly going to embroider, I wouldn't use this one as color changing is time consuming, invest in a multi color machine with a larger base for true embroidery.

"Not reccomended, very disappointed." 2009-02-21

I bought the Brother SE270D just under a year ago. I wanted to have a sewing machine for everyday projects, curtains, dolls clothes, hemming, mending and to have fun with embroidery. I never got to the embroidery because I never felt confident that it could operate well enough to handle embroidery.Just plain sewing had tangling thread, fabric bunching, a selected stitch not performing (eg switching from straight to zig zag took a couple more tries before it would change even though the display showed a different stitch selected), awkward bobbin winding ( you have to be very careful with that) and it cannot handle thicker fabrics. I bound some small towels with cotton binding and it could barely manage to sew. The final straw was the auto needle threader failing. I took it to a Brother agent and was told nothing could be done about the auto threader and that in fact the machine has lots of problems and is a "load of crap". They had one mounted on the wall sectioned to show the inside and she explained that the construction of the machine made it difficult or impossible to repair if things go wrong. I am taking mine back to where I bought it and will get a full refund.
