I'm a 28 year-old male and this machine rocks! It is effortless to thread and set up the bobbin, both of which have always been the major barrier to me mending my own clothes on other machines. It sews through everything I've ever put under the needle. The pedal is precise; I can sew one stitch at a time or scream through a pant leg in 5 seconds. All of the other controls are easy to understand and use and the machine even has a built-in "beep beep" that warns me when I try to do something stupid like sew with the needle in the wrong position. I also like the bright LED work light that won't burn out until long after I have. Other special tricks I've performed with this machine: you can add a double needle to do some cool hems or designs, and you can even order an attachment foot that transforms this machine into a serger (well, kinda.) The only issue I've had in the year I've owned it is the "automatic threader" which is a strange device that pulls the thread through the eye of the needle. It worked fine with the factory installed needle, but hasn't worked with any replacement needles I've used. I could care less though; how hard is it to push thread through a hole? I get that more experienced sewers might have other issues with this machine, but for someone who wants to hem some pants, repair clothes, sew the occasional costume, and experiment with basic clothing construction, you can't go wrong with this model.

I bought this machine a few months ago to replace the cheap sewing machine that I had been using since college. It's a pretty sturdy machine, has a good weight to it, and works like a dream! Since it's electronic, you can change stitches with the push of ONE button (instead of having to mess around with 3 or 4 knobs like my old one) and it's super quite. I make tote bags, so I usually sew through multiple layers of fabric, interfacing, and webbing; and this machine handles it beautifully! My only complaint is that when you remove the flat bed and try to use the long arm, there is a rod of plastic (seemingly useless) that gets in the way. So if you plan to sew a lot of pant lets ,or shirt cuffs, you might want to consider something with a better long arm.

First of all the auto tension is not auto it does need to be adjusted the button hole feature sews the button holes inconsistently keep an eye on tension through out project both bobbin and upper and find alternatives to button holes- i have - and you will be just fine

Avoid this machine at all costs. I purchased mine on Jan. 5 2009 and today all it will do is punch holes in the material. The machine is an import not made by singer and it shows having failed just over the 90 day return period. Singer should be ashamed of having sullied the name with this cheap import. Buy one if you must but you will save a lot of time if you just take the 200.00 and burn it.

I'm only giving this product 4 stars because the electronic numbers (for the stitches) went haywire rather quickly after I bought it (doesn't show correctly now, only pieces of numbers!), and it suddenly no longer makes buttonholes. Sigh. BUT-- other than that, this machine is REALLY great. I've sewn leather with it, and denim, and ballistic ripstop nylon webbing, and 4 layers of faux fur, and satin. It ALWAYS gets the job done, even if it sounds like it's straining sometimes. (Poor thing, i ask it to do things that I should be doing on an industrial machine, but it hasn't failed me yet!) I love that it has a threading diagram on it (for top thread AND bobbin), and it's really easy to work with. I'd highly recommend it!
